A documentary about Puerto Rico's complicated relationship with the United States - otherwise known as the "STATUS" issue.
This is a monumental documentary that will help educate Americans and Puerto Ricans about their mutual relationship. Please help us create The Last Colony with your Kickstarter contribution.
What does statehood, independence, commonwealth, and the new version of commonwealth represent to Puerto Rico and to the United States?
We will interview key political figures from ALL PARTIES in Puerto Rico to find answers to this question. We will also interview historians, economists, and other leading experts in the status issue and expose the truth behind each alternative. We will compare and contrasts the information that we get from the leading experts with the information that we find on the streets of Puerto Rico.
On November 6, 2012 the people of Puerto Rico will hold a referendum to possibly redefine Puerto Rico's relationship with the United States. The referendum will be a two part ballot. The first part will ask voters if they want a change in status or prefer to remain a US commonwealth. The second part will ask that voters choose from three options: statehood, independence and sovereign free association. The documentary takes place in the months leading up to this referendum and will follow the different campaigns for each of the alternatives.
The film will present the legal, political, cultural and economic implications of each option the Puerto Rican people will face in their referendum. The documentary will explain in detail this intricate debate that has dominated the Island’s politics for over 100 years and how little of this debate is known in the rest of the USA. Above all, the documentary will explain why Puerto Rico’s status should be part of the national conversation.
We have shot part of the documentary and have done extensive interviews with key political figures such as former Governor of Puerto Rico, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá (pro-commonwealth advocate), and current Secretary of State of Puerto Rico, Kenneth McClintock (pro-statehood advocate).
Here I answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the documentary:
1) Why is it called The Last Colony?
2) What are my intentions?
(I made this in Spanish because these questions have only been asked by my fellow Puerto Ricans.)
This 2 minute teaser shows how the people in the streets of Puerto Rico feel about the status issue.

The challenges of making the documentary will come in DISTRIBUTION. Our first milestone is to raise funds, our second is to make the documentary the best possible way we can and our third goal is to reach a wide audience with our story.
We will send the documentary to film festivals in order to generate buzz and awards that will help generate a larger audience. At the stage we are now, we have to focus on production but when the movie is finished, we will face many challenges in finding a distribution partner. Fortunately, our production team has plenty of experience working on distribution and we expect to secure distribution shortly after the documentary is finished.
