Animating the sideshow banner
My friend Kristina came all the way from New Mexico to help me animate a sequence involving a sideshow banner, using a method of painting directly on glass. I figured Krissi's style of loose gestural painting would complement my exacting devotion to technique, and keep us from getting bogged down in details. It worked out nicely, and over the last few days we developed the kind of creative rapport I try to cultivate with my small but well-chosen cast and crew.
You can see our setup in the top photo- lights, sideshow banner artwork under glass, and 16mm camera supported by tripod. Kristina paints on the glass, altering the image in increments as I click one frame at a time from above. Then I try my hand at direct-paint animation!
