About this project

For the last year I have been working on a nine song musical project based on a book written by Zora Neale Hurston. The album is called, "Songs for Janie." My creative partner, Risi "Kat" and I met in May 2009. I told her about all the things I'd been writing about and all the things I'd been going through as a wife, mother, singer, and teacher. She came back to me with the concept for my album which resonated with me first because I am a fan of Zora Neale Hurston's book, "Their Eyes Were Watching God." I read it twice and as a woman with similar stages as the main character, I thought it would be a perfect platform for me to express my life and personality through Janie's story. I want this to be an organic, soulful and folk musical project. Banjos, percussionists, harmonicas, organs, bass, etc.. I am so excited about this creative journey. "Songs for Janie" is healing for me and I know it will be for many other women as well who are on the continuous journey to freeedom, joy, and love.

As an independent artist and working mother of three, it has been difficult to save the money needed to fund this project for a proper and quality production. I am raising money to fund this aspect of the project.

Tamara Wellons is a 33 year old songwriter/singer and mother of three who like Janie Crawford is journeying through self revelation. She was first introduced to "Their Eyes Were Watching God," her senior year in her Southampton County, VA high school, in the speech club where she had to read an excerpt of Janie and Grandma's dialogue in Chapter 3.

A lover of music and a singer of jazz, soul and house music, Tamara Wellons, with the help of her creative partner, Risikat Okedeyi are bringing together Songs for Janie, to give tribute, not only to history but to girls who become powerful and beautiful women who against all odds.

Tamara has had success with her latest project, Life Is, where she gives a stunning rendition of Nirvana's rock classic, "Smells Like Teen Spirit." She has had international recognition with Ocha Records for house music in the global soul community. Tamara's work is classic and her message through songs transcends generations.
