BLACK ROSE

a new sexy work by Tommie-Waheed Evans

with Waheed Works...A Dance Project

September 2012 @The University of the Arts

Our newest work  BLACK ROSE  is already garnering buzz in the Philadelphia dance scene as one of fall's hottest shows . Critic Lewis Whittlington writes- "Evans' work is filled with dramatic stage composition and adagio work that shows the fullness of his choreographic ideas.  And great exit phrases- release moves that are  ironic, witty and turning into signatures known as Tommie-isms." BLACK ROSE features an all star cast of dancers from the Philadelphia area.

Program Description:

BLACK ROSE- a theatrical array of occurrences
September 2012 @The University of the Arts

Evans' latest work, BLACK ROSE , is an curtain-raiser episode that deals with lavish devotion, growth, private space, dealings with loss , vengeance, existence, sadness and farewell. Love is an ongoing competition between pain and pleasure; between reason and impulse. It's a tangled, confusing, sexy mess - right up until the final heartbreaking image.

The ballet challenges the eye of performance, how we perceive it, take it, and create our own narration . In a series of circumstances that seem to connect to one another in mystery. Whether you interpret the meaning of a black rose as hate filled, love filled or tragic it is undeniable that the black rose or as close as we can get to it is a beautiful sight to behold. While creating small affairs and leaving much to chance and revel in, Evans aims to create a dramatic atmosphere that can bring us back to pure enjoyment of the theater.
