A working stiff, a grad student and a stay-at-home dad hope to defy the odds and take their show on the road with your help!
The New York International Fringe Festival or Bust! As a small, Chicago-based arts collective, we are incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to take one of our shows to the highly selective FringeNYC Fest. But thumbing it aside, the only way we’re ever going to get there is with a little help from our friends and family, not to mention a little kindness from strangers too.
As you can imagine, putting up a show and taking it on the road comes with a number of expenses: entry fees, rehearsal space rentals, gas money, room and board, costumes, storage fees, props and set pieces, promotional materials, parking, website updates, the list goes on and on.
As a group of non-equity theater artists who are working stiffs, grad students, and stay-at-home-dads by day, we are accustomed to working on a shoestring budget. We waste nothing, recycle most, work for free, and more often than not still end up in the red at the close of each show. And we’re fine with that. Honestly. We’re not in it for the money. But even though we cut as many corners as we can with a strong DIY work ethic, we can’t escape the fact that this time around we could really use your help.
Here’s the gist…
About the show:
The Magpies Present
THE GREAT GALVANI
Written, directed and designed by Shawn Reddy
Performed by H.B. Ward
Stage managed and board operated by Mark Chrisler
The Great Galvani is the story of an electroshock therapist and larger-than-life showman in the twilight of his career. A freakish tinkerer of dead frogs who dissects everything from the famed Fiji Mermaid and Tom Thumb to catastrophic loss and the need for bewildering beauty. Inspired by P.T. Barnum’s grand traveling museum and Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish.
