About this project

Carrier Pigeon is a magazine we've been working on for the past year and dream of taking to print. We are a group of New York-based artists, illustrators, writers and designers. The format of the magazine is full-color, 10"x13", and 98 pages. The content intertwines six fine-art portfolios of 6–10 pieces each in full- or double-page spread presentation with six works of original fiction accompanied by five to ten illustrations each.

The artists on staff include:
Bruce Waldman: www.brucewaldman.com
Ray Jones: www.jonesray.com
Kristy Caldwell: www.shortdivision.com
Christopher Darling: www.christopherdarling.com
Eric Collins: www.oobust.com/forsale.html
Jason Bishop: www.jasonbishop.net
Matt Barteluce: www.mattbarteluce.com
Russ Spitkovsky: www.spitatart.com

The first issue of Carrier Pigeon will include the following artists in addition to those listed above:
Frances Jetter: http://www.fjetter.net
Rie Hasegawa: http://harie.net/en/index.html
Justin Sanz: www.justinsanz.com
Bill Maxwell: http://www.williamcmaxwell.com, www.maxwellfinearts.com
Yael Balaban: www.shayaryegallery.com, http://www.pyramidart.org/artists.html

The first issue also features the following writers:
Chris Stanton, Ryan Scamehorn, Victor Giannini, Ben Schaeffer, Russ Spitkovsky and Brian Thompson.

Statement of Intent:
Carrier Pigeon is a magazine of illustrated fiction and fine art. By giving full creative control to the artists, illustrators, designers and writers this magazine hopes to level the conventional perception of the singularity of each artistic discipline. Carrier Pigeon provides artists with a venue for telling stories in an undisturbed environment by offering the chance to show full bodies of work and unconditional artistic freedom in both direct subject matter and the interpretation of text. This publication will be printed quarterly.

About us:

In the last year we've put together three issues in our spare time and will soon start work on the fourth. Our main goals are to allow artists complete freedom and to have the magazine commercially distributed. We believe the gallery wall should not be the only place left for sincerity in the art world. There are taboos put up between fine art, illustration and design that we would love to destroy by allowing everyone involved in Carrier Pigeon the chance to present a narrative in an undisturbed fashion. We also believe that people are smart enough to understand art that is not packaged for the lowest common denominator but that those people have nowhere to go for such an outlet in the commercial print world. We hope to be that outlet.

This $10,000 we are trying to raise on Kickstarter would be used for the printing of 1,000 copies of the magazine. We hope to use this first issue to raise reader interest and attract advertising, which we plan to approach in accordance with our statement of intent, allowing artists to interpret the advertised product with absolute creative freedom, thus creating a one-of-a-kind ad experience limited to our product. We also plan to sell iPad versions of Carrier Pigeon on our website(soon to come):
www.carrierpigeonmag.com

The scheduled release of issue 1 of Carrier Pigeon is November 1st, 2010.

We at Carrier Pigeon would like to thank our sponsors in advance. In backing Carrier Pigeon, you will be backing 18 artists every three months as well as supporting the art world at large and a magazine that we love, cherish, and on which we have spent most of our free time this year.

Sincerely,
The Carrier Pigeon staff
