About this project
The Nile Project is a cross-cultural initiative bringing together musicians from the Nile countries to perform along the river and around the world.

We are so excited that we have raised our minimum goal of $10,000. To produce the first iteration of our Nile Project, we have raised our goal to $15,000. If we succeed, we should have our first performance ready by June 2012 - and you will be the first to see it through a live video stream. So please help us make some music!
So who are Meklit and Mina?
Meklit is an Ethiopian-American singer-songwriter (www.meklithadero.com), and Mina is an Egyptian ethnomusicologist (www.zambaleta.org).What are they up to on the Nile?
Together these two created the Nile Project. Loosely based on the Silk Road Project, the Nile Project is a multicultural musical platform that will bring together hip-hop and traditional musicians living in the Nile countries (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Egypt) to play and record music, to tour down the river and its source lakes on a boat made of recycled water bottles, and to share an experience that will connect the peoples of the river.
Meklit and Mina realized that though East Africa's Nile cultures have shared millenia of history, today they do not know very much about each other. They decided to start this musical project so that the people of the river could get to know their neighbors through a mutual sharing of stories, sound, music, mythology, and culture.
How has the project gone so far?
After only a few short months, Meklit got the TED Senior Fellowship with the Nile Project as her main fellowship focus. We're also currently engaged in conversations with Lincoln Center 's David Rubenstein Atrium, with a view toward the iconic performing arts center potentially serving as our North American presenting partner. Things are really starting to roll.
We need your help to get to the river!
At the end of the trip, we will have selected the members of the Nile Project All Stars, conducted approximately 50 video interviews with people living along the river, and collected songs about the river from the various peoples and cultures we meet along the way.
