Why San Francisco? What about my town?
Why San Francisco?
Beyond the fact that Anna lives and works in San Francisco, there are two other big reasons why we want to bring ArtAround to the city.
For one, there is amazing public and street art here from the murals in Mission's Clarion Alley, to public statues to installations like SOMA's "Defenestration."
Second, last year we learned that the City of San Francisco needed help to map and catalogue the art it owns, and that the civic collection was suffering from disrepair. The city is only now undergoing its first-ever, two-year survey of the art it owns. We hope ArtAround, in part, will be a tool that will help the city not only map this art (and perhaps expedite the city's process), but make people more aware of the art around them that the city has invested in.
What about my city?
We are going city by city with ArtAround to make a concerted and concentrated effort to build community and awareness about the app and about public and street art. It takes time and care to do these kinds of things. We want to do it right.
Because we have worked with Code for America to open up city-owned art data (location, image, artist, medium) in a machine-readable format in Philadelphia, Seattle and Boston, these are likely the next cities for us. We also know of civic hackers in Oakland who are willing to put some muscle behind an art app there. We'd be happy to collaborate with them as well.
Please continue to send along your questions and pictures of art.

We saw a new piece of art in front of San Francisco City Hall last night while we were heading to dinner and then back home again -- it's by Korean Artist Choi Jeong Hwa. It's an enormous lotus blossom made from sheets of red fabric, air from a motor and LEDs:
