Hello, the premiere of Hard, Hard, Hard! is going to happen on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 2:30pm in Bryan Recital Hall, College of Musical Arts, Bowling Green State University, Ohio during the New Music Festival 2011 METHOD IN MADNESS. You have all played an important role in making this possible and I hope you can join me on this special day! All the other pieces in the same concert are very interesting too (I am involved in three other ones) so don't miss it! Let me know if you would like me to send you a flyer of the festival (Oct. 12-15). David Lang is the guest composer this year!
Thank you! first and foremost to all of you who have pledged, including people I know: Vicki and Drew Fondrk (the nicest couple I met in Wisconsin-Madison), Yaniv from Israel, Hai, Jordan, Ting, Rob, Stacey, John, and of course Dr. Satterlee who talked to me into commissioning and kickstarting! And to people I do not know: Christopher Butler, Timothy Weaver, and Jason Webb from the UK! It was just so kind of you and I feel very encouraged by your generous support! This is my very first experience with kickstarter and I was not sure if it was going to work for me, especially seeing that nothing had happened in the first few days after I launched the project. I will be contacting each one of you about your rewards. I also wanted to thank those of you who have been concerned about how the project is going (Dr. Meizel, Julie...etc..). I definitely owe you some updates:
Jan 2011 -- With help from my colleague Conrad, we brought over all the "toys" to the composer Ge Gan-ru who lives in New Jersey. In addition to those I had collected for Wrong, Wrong, Wrong!, I also brought over the new toys I got recently. Co-commissioner Genevieve found some cricket boxes, toy paper accordion, and chinese hand drum in San Francisco Chinatown and she mailed them to me. Thanks to her that I can have some "real" cricket sound for my next performance! My Chinese friend Mei has also brought back many different Chinese toy instruments from China for me while helping me with the research on these poems. I really appreciate her thoughts and help.
mid Feb. 2011 – I was told by the director of MidAmerican Center of Contemporary Music (MACCM) Dr. Jacqueline Leclair that they were interested in programming this new commissioned work in the 32nd Annual New Music Festival, which will be held in Bowling Green State University College of Musical Arts on Oct. 13-15, 2011.This was so exciting! So we have decided to wait till October to premiere this work instead of premiering it in my next DMA recital on April 10 (but do let me know if you are interested in coming or knowing more about my recital!). I will let you know when I have more details about the day and time of the first performance. I hope those of you who live in the US can make it! I will also be sure to personally invite you to the premiere for those of you who have pledged, as promised.
Feb. 22, 2011 – Ge wrote me and told me that he had composed most of Hard, Hard, Hard! And is planning to have it done very soon, maybe this month! We are wondering though, if there is a better title for this companion piece. If we follow the same procedure as Wrongx3 using last three words of the poem, Hardx3 is what the sequel should be called…but….what do you think? Any thoughts???
