About this project
This January I am returning to Ghana, West Africa, to record an album with Ghanaian and American musicians. This will be a full-circle masterwork of sorts for me, bringing together my previous work in Ghana and my music career with Americana group Hot Buttered Rum. I am looking for funding to support the costs of recording in Accra: studio time and musicians' time. Note: most of this money will be going to Ghanaians and staying in Ghana.
On my first trips to Ghana I recorded an album of field recordings (which I sold to benefit an orphanage in Accra), and made a movie on threatened traditional dance and music (on behalf of a group of elders). For the last eight years Hot Buttered Rum has toured the USA and beyond, playing at festivals such as Telluride Bluegrass, Newport Folk, and Bonnaroo, and earning a dedicated fanbase.

This album will bring together elements of Ghanaian music and Bluegrass music, all tied together with my Americana-style songwriting. It will bring together luminaries from Ghana and the States alike. It has taken a decade of experience to be in a place to do this, and I'm going to work tirelessly to bring it to fruition. Thank you for your support.
Everyone will be able to watch a movie which is being made about the excursion. A concert featuring much of the music will happen at the Independent Music Hall in San Francisco in March 2011.
For donations of $7 or more, I will mail you a project poster.
