Imagine Touring the Willamette River on a Classic Wooden Boat
This summer I'm starting a business in Portland, Oregon called Portland Boat Tours. This has been a dream that I've been passionate about for some time. It doesn’t get much better than floating on the river in a wooden boat and I want to be able to offer this experience to a broader group of people who may not have had access to such an important perspective on our city.
This Kickstarter project invites you to come along with Portland Boat Tours for our inaugural season and participate in a real way in the story and excitement of the startup of this endeavor. The American dream is alive and well and you can help see it unfold firsthand!
The focus of this project will be a self published book detailing the first season of operation of our fledgling company. It will include the challenges and rewards of starting a small business, some "how-to" of what we did to get it going, and some of the stories from the first passengers on the tours as they uniquely experience Portland from the Willamette River for the first time.
I'm excited and I want you to be able to share in this project and be a part of it. Whether that means pre-ordering for the business and taking a tour of Portland with me this summer or connecting through reading a book or blog about the experience, I know that I need your support for this project to be a success.
The way Kickstarter works is that if I don't get the full $5000 pledged by the deadline, you aren't charged and I get nothing. It also works the other way and you’ll find many examples of projects on this site that more than meet their goal. I would be eternally thankful if you made this project one of those. Because of how kickstarter works, your support for this project ensures that Portland Boat Tours is successful this summer and that there’s a story to tell in the book.
How will your pledge be used?
The bulk of the money will be used to complete getting the business off the ground. The final remaining items to do that are: obtaining a captain’s license, marine insurance, business licensing and fees, some boat maintenance, printing/postage/promotion, fuel, CPR/FirstAid/Physicals, and dock fees. I also need money to provide the great rewards listed on the right of your screen including publishing of the book for you to enjoy.
Thank you for investing your time in learning about this project and choosing to make it a success. I hope you're as excited as I am.
If you would like more than one of a particular reward, simply pledge in a multiple of that amount. For example, if you'd like two tickets to the kickoff party you would make a donation of $50 and select the $25 reward level. You’ll get two tickets. If you'd like to bring a guest with you on your $50 75minute tour, pledge $100 and select the $50 reward level and you'll get a boat tour for two! If you have questions, just ask!
The first answer is simply logistics: the way Kickstarter works, if the project does not raise the remaining money it needs by January 21st, none of the backer’s credit cards are charged, I get nothing, and the project just ends. The second question is tougher to answer: if the Kickstarter project fails, Portland Boat Tours will just not exist. I’d have to consider ever trying to launch it again but for the foreseeable future this dream would be over and I’d simply move on.
You are able to donate to the project at any amount (not just at the specific reward amounts). If you would like more than one of a particular reward, simply pledge in a multiple of that amount. For example, if you'd like two tickets to the kickoff party you would make a donation of $50 and select the $25 reward level. You’ll get two tickets. With the exception of the captain’s club level, all of the rewards listed are per person.
Portland Boat Tours makes a great gift. If you have a special combination of rewards you would like to request for your pledge, please send a message after making your pledge to explain the combination of rewards you’d like. If you have questions ahead of time, just ask!
At the $25 pledge level you get one ticket to the party. If you’d like to bring a spouse or guest, you will need to purchase more than one ticket by adjusting your pledge amount in multiples of $25 for the number of tickets you need while still selecting the $25 reward level. Children under 12 are free to attend.
When the project is funded you will receive a form with information to fill out that will allow us to contact you to schedule your tour. Tours will generally be available to be scheduled between Memorial day and Labor day during evenings and weekends. If you have a special occasion we can accommodate, let us know!
Three adult passengers is very comfortable. Five passengers plus the captain is the maximum capacity of the boat. We can accommodate exchanging passengers at the dock if you have a very large party and need additional seating for the experience. Additional fees may apply depending on the situation so ask ahead of time. Note that the rewards listed here are per person. If you would like more than one person on your tour, see “I would like more than one of a particular reward. How do I do that?” in the FAQ.
Children under 12 years of age are FREE on Portland Boat Tours as long as they are accompanied by at least one adult per child (for their safety). We have a variety of life jacket sizes for infant on up and will ask about your child’s size prior to your tour to make sure we have a good fit for your child. Children (even on laps) count toward the maximum of 5 passengers at a time on the boat.
The estimated delivery is October 2012. As a backer, you can follow our progress on the “Updates” portion of this page.
Longer tours are available and can be indicated by pledging a multiple of the reward amount for the number of people and extra time you would like.
