Nature Deficit Disorder
Project by Mike Shipman
Project by Mike Shipman
Children are being lured by technology to static, unimaginative indoor activities that isolate and alienate them from the outdoors. Richard Louv, in his book "Last Child in the Woods", describes this isolation as Nature Deficit Disorder, the symptoms being diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties, and higher rates of emotional and physical illnesses. This "disorder" can affect children, adults, families and communities. Fortunately, this affliction can be recognized and reversed through the simple process of spending time outdoors exploring and connecting with nature.
Project Description:
This project is creating 10 - 12 conceptual photographic images relating to concepts and situations expressed in the book showing the various barriers children, in particular, face between them and the outdoors.
Project Plan:
These photographs will be created using local talent in Idaho locations during the summer and fall of 2009, with exhibits beginning in 2010.
The photographs will be created as fine art and a limited edition series (16x24 prints) displayed in local, regional, and national gallery shows. Reprints and licensing will be sold to raise money for Be Outside Idaho, a non-profit, multi-agency and private cooperative formed in Idaho to encourage parents and children to explore the outdoors.
I will use the funds to purchase props related to concepts in each piece, hire models (if necessary), some travel expenses, printing and framing of the gallery pieces, print marketing materials (postcards and mailers) for advertising, and to cover other miscellaneous expenses incurred during the course of the project.
