I am developing a sustainable clothing line of one-of-a-kind pieces made completely out of recycled fabric salvaged from used/vintage clothing.
Hey Everybody, Im Nina! I am a 22 year old resident of lovely Springfield, MO where I graduated from Missouri State with a Bachelor's in Fashion Design. I currently work as a sales associate to make ends meet while trying to get a foot in the fashion industry door, which has been difficult with the economy being so terrible. With your help, my dream of developing my own clothing line can become reality. It won't be just another "innovative and unconventional" that's mass produced worldwide. I want to develop a sustainable clothing line made entirely of recycled fabric and notions salvaged from used clothing.
Turn on the news, and you will see countless stories about our economic woes and others about environmental degradation. Because it is now fashionable to be green, our society have attempts to find new ways to limit consumption and waste by reusing and recycling. One area in which we are failing is the fashion industry, which wastes tons of resources through the mass production of clothing. Mass production doesn't just hurt the environment. Economic conditions here and abroad are forcing many poor, young women to toil in bad working conditions to make new clothes for Americans. I realized that by creating a sustainable clothing line out of recycled fabric, I could help reduce waste, as well as provide an alternative way to buy clothes that doesn't exploit the poor.
I came up with this idea after realizing how many large, layered and out-dated garments made out of beautiful, unique and timeless prints and patterned fabrics are littering thrift stores. It is very unfortunate that many of these pieces will never be worn again, except possibly for Halloween. If you're around me long enough you would know just how much I hate things going to waste. While my tendency to be thrifty is rooted from my upbringing by my very frugal mother and is something I will always be inclined to do, I find that it is important now more than ever that we be aware of our consumption of products and attempt to reuse and recycle as much as possible.
My line will consist of one-of-a-kind handmade pieces that recycle as much of the garments--including the buttons, zipper and lining--as possible. Even the tags and care labels will hopefully be made from recycled materials. I have already purchased many garments from thrift stores and flea markets and spent many hours taking them apart to reuse their fabric. I even designed and produced a few pieces(including my picture piece). After all my efforts I have found myself short of time and funds to continue to progress.
Since getting my project approved, I found a bigger work area ( my room was my old work space) and a partner to help out. Unfortunately without funding I cannot afford rent for the space or supplies to produce a line. If funding is successful I will have enough money for a few months rent until we start making a profit to keep production moving and I will purchase a drafting table, a better dressform, digital camera and all the other supplies needed to make this line possible.
Also if all goes well, I hope to showcase my line in a fashion show this fall. If this happens, I all my backers are invited as honorary guests with front-row seating.
I appreciate any kind of support, so if you cannot afford to donate for funding I will gladly accept clothing donations. Whatever I don't find use for I will donate to a local thrift store. Thanks!!
