URANUS (a play about waste) is the first and flagship in a series of ecologically-inspired Planet Plays
URANUS (a play about waste) was a finalist for the 2009 O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, and has been a favorite since its inception in 2006. Taking stock of today’s ever-upgrading culture, URANUS asks an important question: what do we get rid of? It examines this theme via three interwoven stories: William Herschel (the "Father of Modern Astronomy") has discovered a planet, but he thinks it’s a comet, and he's fallen in love. Two young backpackers are mysteriously transported to a planet made entirely of Earth's waste. A derelict called Gaea, seaches among piles of her treasured trash for a waste rock that has the power to restart the world. Told with simple, poetic storytelling and moronic humor, URANUS is a hodgepodge of history, myth and make-believe.
Like all in our series of ecologically-inspired Planet Plays, URANUS blends environmental science with the history and mythology associated with the planet to create a wildly imaginative piece of original fiction. In addition to being an experiment in storytelling and physical theater, each play is intended to be a resource, igniting audiences in dialogue about topical environmental issues and prominent scientific history.
Superhero Clubhouse will produce URANUS in a community of New York City in the spring of 2011, partnering with local ecology organizations and creating our set from curb sides and dumpsters of the community. We will use our Kickstarter funds to help offset the costs of space rental, publicity, and a small stipend of one million dollars for each of the artists involved.
