About this project

Globally recognized as the indispensable document of New York Street culture of the early '80s, STYLE WARS is the filmatic record of a golden age of youthful creativity that exploded into the world from city in crisis.

STYLE WARS has had an extraordinary impact around the globe, inspiring succeeding generations of youthful fans. Winning high praise from the local graffiti writing community for its authenticity and the Grand Prize for Documentaries at the 1984 Sundance Film Festival, the first of many awards and citations. STYLE WARS screened on PBS television around the country beginning in early 1984.

STYLE WARS was originally edited to its 69-minute length from about 30 hours of 16 mm film shot in 1981 and 1982. The original negatives have become damaged during the many years it has been in storage. Fortunately, it will be possible to repair it, using digital technology, painstakingly working on each damaged frame. But it must be done NOW. The restored film will have unprecedented sharpness and clarity and the vibrant colors of the painted trains will be revealed in their original intensity. Most importantly, the restoration of STYLE WARS means that future generations will be able to enjoy and learn from the culturally historical film.
