What the eyes don't see, the heart doesn’t feel. The Italian saying meant little to Jackie Russell until her world came crashing down.
What the eyes don't see, the heart doesn’t feel. The Italian saying did not sink in for Jacklene Russell until her world came crashing down. What the Eyes Don't See is the true tale of a woman who built a powerfully successful career and reputation in the fashion industry but lost her sense of self among the designer bags and shoes, only to emerge from the smoke and confusion of a jet-set life and reclaim herself. Delicious anecdotes about celebrities and insider details about building a successful brand in the fashion world are woven into a narrative about how power, glamour, and money can obscure that a life has strayed off course, and how the pain of betrayal can lead to the joy of reinvention.
Jacklene Russell, like so many young people entering the fashion industry in the 1980s, has dreams of helping to style people by drawing upon her own appreciation for aesthetics, art, and creativity. She arrives on a Caribbean island for a six-month stint as manager of a high-end retail clothing store that features fashions from major European design houses, and within days, meets Michele. Here is the man who will become her lover, husband, soul mate, and business partner for 20 years. Trained as a classical ballet dancer and a fashion illustrator, she shares with Michele a love of design and a thirst for adventure.
Jacklene and Michele lead a gypsy life at first, traveling between St. Maarten and Italy and around Europe, but soon move to New York City, become business partners, and build up the American division of the conservative Italian company Fox’s. They devote themselves to bringing fashion to the public and finding innovative ways to merchandise the brand. Together, they host parties and events, sell the line into top retail stores, find celebrities willing to wear the company’s accessories, and woo fashion editors with free goods so as to create buzz and inspire column inches in newspapers and magazines. Jackie begins to represent a top jewelry designer, and pours her money into a home in Italy where she imagines she will retire someday with Michele.
For years, Jackie has minimized the impact of her troubled childhood, a violent assault when she was in college, and her low self-esteem. When she senses that she and Michele are growing apart, she backs down from openly confronting him and simply works harder at her marriage. Jackie puzzles over his frequently muttered motto, “Occhio non vedi, cuore non duole,” literally translated as, “What the eyes don’t see, the heart doesn’t feel.”
Jacklene and Michele are at the top of the fashion game when one day, her world comes crashing down. When the smoke clears, she is forced to confront the truth about Michele, her marriage, and herself.
Dear friends and family,
It's in the spirit of Kickstarter to raise only as much as you need to begin your project. My goal is set at $7,000 in pledges, and any additional support will go to covering the total costs as listed below:
- $5,000 for my writing partner, Gabriel Loki Campbell, a graduate of NYU’s creative writing program, who will receive $1000 monthly for five months.
- $10,000 to my editor, Nancy Peske, who has agreed to complete the manuscript for a fee of $10,000, though her usual fee is $25,000. (The consideration was made in bringing Gabriel on board). Nancy Peske is a professional ghostwriter, developmental editor and bestselling pop culture/inspirational author who has worked with many famous experts in the field of mind/body/spirit wellness.
- $1,800 for a legal review by attorney Anthony Elia to protect against liability.
- $1,000 to publish through Launch Pad Publishing, Hay House, or Cosimo, who I’m currently in negotiation with thanks to friend's referral.
- $1,000 to Noise 784, a PR company owned by my dear friend Fabrizio Babino, who will assist at the gracious rate of $500/month for two months.
- $500 for miscellaneous costs such as fees for up-dating the trademark of the book title and renewing the domain name.
Total Expenses for What the Eyes Don't See = $19,300
