I am working on a sort of spin-off of my artistic projects - a line of creative storage solutions for the kind of clutter we all have (paperclips, safety pins, sewing supplies, pens, pencils, and other random *stuff*). My idea is to transform all that stuff into a sweet, silly, cute little village by making handmade houses and buildings that are secretly storage containers.
I am an artist who has been working for over ten years. I show my work at museums and galleries (I am represented by BravinLee in NYC), and have been in the NY Times, Art in America, and a bunch of other publications. But what I liked about this idea is that it's a way for just about anyone to transform a small space in their home into an installation; to use space that is already there and repurpose it into art.
My little houses are funky, homemade, and anti-Martha Stewart - looking at them, you know there's a real human being out there who made them on her sewing machine, one at a time. This project will never be "huge" like a Murakami licensing deal with Louis Vuitton or a bunch of Marcel Dzama tshirts, and that's the whole point - it's a way for ordinary people to have a handmade, original work of art in their home, not a knock-off made by a corporation somewhere, but something made by the artist herself. I am creating these by following a pattern I designed, so each one isn't totally unique, but they're not pressed out by a factory somewhere either.
I've just started with three basic patterns - a larger house, a pair of smaller houses (pictured), and a farmhouse with silo. I am working on other patterns including a church, supermarket, and hospital.
I am asking for a small sum of money to put towards buying advertising on etsy and also supplies so I can start making a whole bunch of these. I would really like to get a push to get them out there before the holiday season. With enough momentum, I think this project can really take off and add a whole new dimension to my studio practice.
