Everything Waffles: Creating Portraits From the Web
In late 2008 I got my first cat from an animal rescue center in Indiana. Waffles, as I would name her, is a longhaired calico with a deformed ear from a previous untreated ear infection. Around this time LOLcats, images of cats overlaid with humorous text, and odd family portraiture became popularized on the Internet creating many websites centered on these themes.
In July 2010 I created my own portrait studio in order to recreate some of the portraits online using Waffles as a character in each of them. The first photograph I used, Lawrence, remains the only image actually containing a cat in the original photograph. Following this image I collected many popularized photos and iconic characters from around the web to reinterpret into my portraits. These images were all recreated by using my cat as a way to merge these two popularized Internet genres into a single frame.
The Project
This project will be carried out in three parts.
First is the gathering of photos and portraits through the web. Photos needed will be a large amount surpassing that of the original series.
Second is the recreation of these photos throughout the web. This requires costuming and set design in a studio.
Finally is the printed material, this project also will result in book and finished website. Similar to the book made of the original series, this will be laid out as portrait book. Along with this part will be the inclusion of a the website Everythingwaffles.com.

All of these costs are estimated and may not accurately reflect the final costs. However all donations will be used toward the project.
As you can see from the links provided below, this project has come far along but need extra funding to reach its intended goal. A small book has been self-published containing the original portraits but this project seeks to expand that goal.

Yes, the book produced as a result of the funding will be sold. The price however will depend on the funds received from the project.

As you can understand, the costumes and set design take a considerable amount of money. Part of the funds will go directly into obtaining these items for the project.
Another portion will go into a permanent website and audio/video podcast.
And finally the majority of the funds will be put into the publication and advertising of a printed book.

I began work in photography as a journalist for my university's marketing department. My photographs didn't involve portraiture until after receiving my BFA in 2010. After seeing many humorous portraits on the web and watching LOLcats through the years, I wanted to bring my own dialogue into these fields. Within a month a began recreating some of the odd portraits found on the web and continued the project using Waffles and myself as stand ins for the original person.
