About this project

SUMMARY:

It is amazing to me how much time and effort wildlife rehabilitators put into caring for orphaned and injured wildlife.

This is going to be a short documentary that focuses on 4 wildlife rehabilitators in Ohio. From the perspective of the caretakers, the struggle and story of the animals will be told. These animals are usually abandoned or injured and would normally die in the wild without human intervention. The ultimate goal is release but sometimes euthanization or permanent captivity for educational purposes are the only options.  Usually only one third of the animals brought in survive, making this a life or death story. These animals include hawks, owls, squirrels, groundhogs, and bats. We are going to explore individual personalities of the animals, rehabilitation philosophy, and memorable moments with the caretakers. We want people to see and care for these individual animals from the perspective of their rehabilitators.

GOAL of Documentary:
Our hope is that this documentary will be meaningful for an audience larger than those who have an interest in animals and wildlife.

The goal is for the audience to see how humans impact wildlife both for harm and for good. We hope the audience sees the rehabilitators as heroes and something that anyone can do.  We also want them to see the role that each species plays in an environment and how vital each animal is. We also want our audience to be empathetic towards the helpless, the weak, and the needy. Our goal is also to promote good stewardship of the environment.

The project:

We are coming to a close with post production. Only a few tweeks left as well as adding the soundtrack.

BUDGET:

We traveled over 800 miles making this film and would like money for gas. We also would like to use the money for entry fees into film festivals as well as for promotional stuff.

Corinne Abbiss: Senior Communication Arts: Film

Corinne has always loved animals, having grown up raising puppies and kittens, and riding horses. She wants to merge her passion for animals and her passion for film making. This past summer she interned at Mystic-Image Productions, a wedding video production company. She normally ran second camera on the weekends when they filmed most weddings. During the week, she edited multi-camera footage from the ceremonies and linear edited footage from the receptions. Last year she wrote and directed a short film for the Open Frame Film Festival. Her sophomore year she was the Director of Photography for a short film, (w)hole. Also last summer she was the videographer for Camp Luz. At the camp, she filmed and edited together a 25-minute video every week as well as taking about 500 digital pictures a week. Corinne also was a cameraperson/production assistant for Collegiateness, a sitcom at Malone, her freshman year.
