Scam encourages people to live the best life they know how! Punks in the street, fun, and how-to in memoir! Coming soon from Microcosm Publishing!
Every once in awhile, a zine comes along that catches on like wildfire. It burns through distant communities, unifying them in a common ethos or mythology that changes things forever. Scam is one of those zines.
Scam was equal parts a guide to living without money and a timeless punk memoir of trainhopping, house shows, cross country tours and the search for the perfect summer swimming hole. Scam was about degenerate Easter morning hunts for cans of beer, illegal hit and run generator punk shows in the streets, and the feeding the homeless and hungry. Scam was about stealing electricity from lamp posts, dumpstering, selling plasma, fighting back--protesting, spraypainting, squatting abandoned buildings. The zines compiled in this book tell of an obsessive, at times quixotic, at times successful quest for a certain kind of victory--victory found in exquisite yet elusive moments of total freedom in an increasingly regulated world.
Scam has gone on to inspire a generation of imitators, the highest form of flattery.
The early years (1991-2000) of Scam, however, have been out of print for far too long. That's why we are teaming up with Scam author, Erick Lyle, to bring them back in a one volume edition. In these times, however, printing prices are going up, and small publishers like us are left struggling to put out great content. Even during hard economic times, though, people want something good to read. That's where you come in. This book costs us over $11,000 to print--$5,000 more expensive than our typical book release.
This collection of zines is quite large. In order to print it, Microcosm needs to be able to pre-sale enough copies. If you give enough money we will not only give you a copy of the finished book, but you will also get a number of other great books that we've published over the years.
Once released, the book will be $16 retail, available at a 40% discount for retailers, and $13 + shipping direct on our website.
