My name's Joshua Yates and in 2004 I took five months to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail.  I had always had an appreciation for natural spaces but that experience solidified in me a desire to better understand those spaces and to find a way to express that understanding visually.  So, I learned to make photographs.

THE PROJECT:

I've been offered room to do a show of my work at a local gallery, Cindy Saadeh Fine Art in downtown Kingsport, TN.  This will involve making 20 - 25 prints in several sizes and then nicely mounting or framing them.  The prints will range in size from 8x10 inches to panoramas that are five feet long.  This sort of thing can get very expensive very quickly.

- PAPER:  It sounds simple but good paper is not cheap.  I will be printing on a fiber based paper (as opposed to resin coated) which will give the prints a much more organic look and feel.  To print an 8x10 this paper runs a couple of bucks per sheet.  An 11x17 piece goes for over $4.  Cutting sheets to length for panoramic images can use up more than $20 per photo.  And of course it often takes several "off" prints before I get one the way I want it.

- MOUNTING MATERIALS: Once the ink is on the paper the prints need to be prepared for the gallery.  This requires either mounting them onto a durable, pH neutral backing material or framing.  The majority of these prints will be mounted onto a stiff and humidity stable version of foam core.  This is both for aesthetic reasons and to help control costs for myself and for potential buyers at the gallery.  Still, this material adds another  40 cents per squre inch to my cost for the prints.  This is not including the necessary adhesive or hardware for hanging the finished piece.

- FRAMING:  At least a few of my prints for the show will be framed.  I'm sure most anyone reading this knows that even "cheap" framing isn't usually cheap. 

- REWARDS:  Finally, a part of the total number you see as my goal for this project will go back into the great rewards I'll be making for my backers  I've tried to offer some really good print sizes and quantities for really reasonable pledge amounts!

All that's to say that making good quality photographic prints and preparing them for a gallery can be kind of expensive.  But it's definitely worth it to see the work presented at the highest possible quality.

All of the rewards listed are prints, of various sizes and combinations, of the images that will be used in the show.  The prints you will receive for your pledge will be of the exact same quality as those I will be putting in the gallery.  This will be true from the panoramas right down to the postcards.  The same great paper and archival inks will be used throughout this project.  

The prints you have a chance to get throught this Kickstarter project really are a great value.

Note: 8x10, 11x17 and 4x6 are APPROXIMATE print sizes.  The actual dimensions of the print will depend on the aspect ratio of the image file.  I've made these photographs with more than one camera so some "8x10" prints will be more like 6.5x10.
