The world is full of lost souls –– Are you one?
THE OVERVIEW:
Inspired by the Radiohead song “Bullet Proof…I Wish I Was,” BULLET PROOF is a crime drama that paints a portrait of Elias, a thirty-something year old Panamanian immigrant, who performs with his guitar on the streets of Venice Beach by day. But on some nights his instrument is not a guitar but rather the cold steel of an HK45. A mercenary by trade, Elias is a messenger of death for the cartel, which makes his lonely existence unbearable at times. He is a lost soul searching for a speck of hope.
Taking this story from page to screen is not possible without a small budget. Largely relying on favors from friends in the film industry, we are able to keep costs reasonably low. But we still need funds to pay for: lighting, grip gear/grip truck, cameras, lenses, sound gear, props, locations, insurance, music rights, sound design, editing, color timing, and most importantly, the acting talent. Like is the case for most things in life, the quality of the picture hinges on money raised, so the more money we have to spend, the higher the production value. Hoping we have some money left over after the film is made, we will cover the fees for festival submissions.
WHEN DO WE PLAN ON MAKING THIS HAPPEN:
We plan on shooting shortly after the Kickstarter is completed sometime in December.
WHY WE ARE DOING THIS: (what we are doing with this after it’s done.)
I am a cinematographer by trade whose creative passion extends to writing and directing. BULLET PROOF is a story born out of a low point in my life. Turning this vision into something I can share is the light at the end of the tunnel for me. This is my passion project.
A more pragmatic reason for making this short is to find financing for the feature script version of this story, which I completed earlier this year. As I continue my revisions of the script, I wanted to have some material to portray what the feature will be about in terms of style, tone, and character.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE GO OVER OUR GOAL:
Any additional funds will only enhance the film and help cover additional festival fees, which will expand BULLET PROOF’s audience.
WHO WE ARE:
We are a band of graduates from the masters program of Chapman University who love storytelling. We use our training and experience to make good films that are accessible beyond borders. Our past projects have been fortunate enough to show at festivals around the world.

I am specifically keeping this short film brief to control complexity, but we do have a handful of scenes that are expensive.
A few shots take place underwater, which require an underwater camera or underwater housing for a camera. This also requires a diver to operate the camera. Another challenge is that we have a shot that lasts for a long take (without cuts) which requires a steadicam and access to a floor of a building (hotel, apartment, or office). The coordination and setup for this scene is detailed.
