Update #1: poolparty update
Hey, just wanted to pass on the latest info on our project. Thanks again to those who've already become backers!
A week ago, I drove out to the farm to take a look at the poolhouse with two of our engineers, Ben Carver and Brian J Sulpizio, for a planning session. I'll hand it over to Ben for a description of how our plan is evolving (this is part of a conversation on our design we've started on John Sayers Recording Studio Design Forum):
"We debated whether or not to track in the pool or kill it by capping it and we arrived at covering it with a heavy deck, making a flush floor throughout the whole space - effectively creating one big live room. We don't NEED to have an isolated control room but maybe we could construct some movable gobos to create some separation from the rest of the space - possibly along the side nearest the sliding doors. We have thought about the need for a pump and possibly a de-humidifier under the deck.
More about the room: The floors are all concrete and brick. The walls are covered with some sort of laminate with micro-bumps (pretty reflective stuff). It's 10ft from the ground to the tin ceiling, which we intend on ripping out, exposing the studs and the single layer of insulation between all the joists. It's then another 6ft to the peak of the A-frame roof. The idea was to leave the joists and insulation in-tact and cover the surface with fabric. This would let lower frequencies through to the "attic" space but we're not sure if that could lead to problems. Maybe we would need to go up there and insulate more... There are also ported sunlights for natural light which we would like to keep.
We would probably deal with the corner windows by making them all big bass traps.
For the windows and sliding doors we might use some box absorbers to double as inside absorption and outside noise cancellation. I should say: it doesn't matter how much sound is escaping, just what's coming in. The music is going to be eclectic, ranging from really quiet noise/experimental, to acoustic jazz and heavier rock. The most noise outside will be the birds and people walking by or laughing in the field. We will encourage people to keep it down when near the studio."
Our design should be finalized quite soon, but we still need more support to reach our fundraising goal. Take a look at the available gifts for backers. I think they're all pretty nice....

Pledge $25 or more Pledge $25 or more
At the twenty-five dollar level, you get the Harold 2009 LP and the Harold 2008 CD, featuring music recorded at our 2008 residency.
Pledge $30 or more Pledge $30 or more
Here at the $30 level you can have a copy of SSION's CD "Fool's Gold"...SSION features J. Ashley Miller, our 2010 session one producer, one of the first beneficiaries of our new recording studio. He'll be working on a release for our partner Captcha Records. In fact, we'll throw in a random release from the Captcha catalog as well. A nice deal.
Pledge $30 or more Pledge $30 or more
Here's another $30 option... you get a copy of the new CD from 2010 session one engineer Brian Sulpizio's band "Health and Beauty." This is pretty much my favorite band in Chicago. And I know you haven't heard them yet. Brian will be intimately involved in the planning and construction of the recording studio. You also get the Harold 2008 CD AND the Harold 2007 CD.
Pledge $40 or more Pledge $40 or more
OK, for $40, you get the Harold 2009 LP, the Harold 2008 CD, and a CD from frequent Harold resident and 2010 Producer Jason Ajemian. Jason Ajemian and the HighLife is on tour now, and formed at last year's residency. You'll get a copy of their new CD "Let me get that Digital." It's really good. We love Jason, and you will too.
Pledge $50 or more Pledge $50 or more
We have T-shirts! They're very nice, with our logo in a variety of colors and designs and produced each year at the residency. At the $51 level you get one of these, along with a copy of the Harold 2009 LP.
Pledge $150 or more Pledge $150 or more
Tim Kinsella Party Pack! Act quick, we only have one of these, and it's special. 2009 Harold producer Tim Kinsella may be best known for his pioneering band Joan of Arc, and at the $150 pledge level, you get a lot of Joan of Arc. 2 LPs, 3 CDs, 2 7-inches. Truly amazing stuff, and we'll throw in a Harold 2009 LP and a Harold t-shirt as well. First pledge at this level gets it and then it's gone...
Pledge $300 or more Pledge $300 or more
We have some special gifts for those who are willing and able to help out with larger pledges. David More, a former Harold resident, has graciously offered to do a sound portrait for a contributor at the $300 level. David would enter your home, record different aspects of your acoustic space, take the recordings home, and offer the finished composition as either a tape, c.d., digital download, or one-off lathe-cut. This offer is for donors in the Chicagoland area. In addition, a grab bag of awesome stuff from all the other offers is yours as well at the $300 level.
Pledge $500 or more Pledge $500 or more
At the $500 level we can offer you the opportunity to enjoy a D&D night with former and future Harold visiting artist Kelly Kaczyinski. D&D includes soup, wine, and drawing. The emphasis is of course on the drawing. It is responsive drawing where Kelly and you, the guest, draw together - collaborate - on the paper. It is a way of conversing, getting to know and challenging one another through drawing. Kelly normally keeps these drawings for her records but has graciously offered to allow the donor to take the drawing(s) if she can photograph the work. This offer is for donors in the Chicagoland area. A grab bag of awesome stuff from the other donation levels is yours as well at the $500 level.
Pledge $500 or more Pledge $500 or more
This reward is from J. Ashley Miller, Harold 2010 week one producer and member of SSION and Carnal Torpor. It is limited to donors in the Kansas City area. Mr. Miller has graciously offered a dueling lesson in which you will learn: "a form of transdisciplinary improvisation in which combatants must overcome their opponent(s) using intellect, embodiment and intuition. Think wizards in a field, not allowed to touch each other... but anything else goes!!!" This reward will serve you well in your efforts to defeat your enemies, and comes with a grab bag of great stuff from our other donation levels as well.
