About this project
Our project is a comic book entitled "The Get Up," written by four writers: Mike Fountain, Marcel Losada, James Ninness, and Joe Pezzula. "The Get Up" is a science fiction story about a ragtag crew of a ship that becomes involved in inter-galactic war and the secrets behind a mysterious, ancient object. Our main characters are comprised of different races, including humans, Draconians (lizard-like in appearance), Fornaxians (like classical "alien" archetypes) and Ursans (mechanized humans). The crew of the Volturius scavenges destroyed vessels after large battles for fuel and gear, and when they come upon an ancient, mythical object with extraordinary technical implications, the crew become the target for both sides of the inter-galactic war alliances. Our story unfolds over twelve 22 page comic book issues. The project's first issue can be used to further the prospects of future publishing, and our goal with Kickstarter is to fund the first book in the series which we can then sell and use to gain publishing for the rest of the series.FAQ

Well, the Draconians are a race of reptilian creatures that currently dominate the known universe, both in the technical superiority and also in their menacing personalities. For more info on the Draconians, our very own James Ninness has updated his blog. Check it out! http://jamesninness.wordpress.com/2012/02/06/getting-to-know-the-get-up-day-one-draconianssrith/

The idea with the Leos was to create the most terrifying creatures in space; a race that neither Draconians, nor Fornaxians, nor Ursans nor Humans would want to mess with. Mike, Marcel, Joe and I write collaboratively. For The Get Up, each of us was charged to create a race with a rich history that we could smash together for our story. Mike took the Draconians, Marcel developed the Humans, Joe spawned the Fornaxians and I birthed the Ursans. But, for the Leos, we worked together to come up with something truly frightening. So, the best way to talk about the Leos without giving away the specifics is probably just to tell you what we were aiming for and let you get the Leos themselves in the book. The Fornaxians are the “cooks” of the Universe. Scientific by nature, this race specializes in genetic manipulation and hormonal alteration. They look like the grey little buggers we all tend to draw when it comes to "encounters". As a species motivated by knowledge, Fornaxians often use themselves as host for various experiments. For much more about Fornaxians in "The Get Up," including a member of the Volturius crew, Quintus, head over to James's blog: http://jamesninness.wordpress.com/2012/02/07/getting-to-know-the-get-up-day-two-fornaxiansquintus/

The Ursans are the result of human mining colonizations in other galaxies. Over a long period of time, these humans began to clone themselves as the genepool became too scarce due to the great distance between the Ursan galaxy and Earth. Sexual organs were all but deleted from genetic code and reproduction became a program wherein one would raise it’s own clone as an eventual replacement. Mar83181.66 (The eighty-third thousand, one hundred and eighty first clone of subject MARSH at sixty-six percent cyborg), or “Mary,” is a refugee, and the last piece of the Volturius crew. For more on Ursans, head to James's blog: http://jamesninness.wordpress.com/2012/02/10/getting-to-know-the-get-up-day-five-ursansmary/

In the history of "The Get Up", the human race at some point started to expand in their own galaxy, establishing mining colonies and creating civilizations like the Ursans (which you'll learn about soon). That doesn’t go well for us… Earth becomes a shithole and is, at the time of the story in "The Get Up," for all intents and purposes, abandoned. Once contact is made with the Draconians and Fornaxians, humans are turned into slave labor for the empire. There really aren’t many of us roaming around. Those that have escaped slavery live as refugees, doing whatever they can to avoid returning to service. Read up on the humans and specifically the characters on the Volturius here: http://jamesninness.wordpress.com/2012/02/08/getting-to-know-the-get-up-day-three-humanscel-jan/
