Unlucky Breaks is a 1-on-1 breakdancing tournament that spurs improvisation and creativity through hilarious themes and restrictions.
What is "Unlucky Breaks"?
Unlucky Breaks is a 1-vs-1 single elimination breakdancing tournament (also known as a "b-boy jam") that will take place in Queens, NY on December 8th, 2012 from 2:00pm to 7:00pm at the Aurora Gallery.
What's so special about the event?
Unlike traditional b-boy competitions, Unlucky Breaks features The Wheel of Misfortune, a wheel that has a number of hilarious themes and limitations. Before each battle, the competitors spin the wheel to find out which theme or limitation will apply to their battle.
Why are you doing this?
We love breakin'! Collectively, the two of us have been dancing and involved in the scene for over 20 years. One defining element of breakin' is the aggressive, battle attitude that competitors take on. Spectators often see it as adversarial and intimidating. While it's really impressive to see the powerful energy that dancers bring to the floor when they're battling, we want to explore other emotions and attitudes.
We're friends with lots of incredibly silly, creative, and fun-loving b-boys. We want to create an event where they can present that side of themselves, and share it with an audience.
How will you accomplish this?
The Right Music: We've hired DJ Ex, one of the most talented DJ's in the b-boy battle circuit. His song selection and ability to read the crowd are unparalleled.
Talented Dancers: New York City is the mecca of Hip-Hop, and we know that many of the most talented b-boys in the city will be attending the event. We're also inviting 8 b-boys from all over the Northeast that are not only superb, but have an incredible amount of charisma and stage presence. We have no doubt that they'll rip it on the day of the event.
Awesome Venue: We have booked The Aurora Gallery, a beautiful art space in Queens, NY that supports the local artist community. It is an intimate space with a great floor for the dancers.
Testing Ideas: To ensure that the Wheel of Misfortune has a set of themes and restrictions that capture the event's light-hearted spirit, we are thoroughly testing with local dancers. We want rules that restrict dancers in unique ways, push the limits of their creativity, and give them an opportunity to showcase their unique voices on the floor. Some themes that our testers have loved are: wearing costumes, using props like boxing gloves, playing with the tempo of the music, and going Gangnam Style.
We're confident we can provide a fun, creative, and all-around awesome event . . . but we can't do it without your support! Thank you so much for taking an interest in Unlucky Breaks. Together, we can make this one-of-a-kind event happen!
As a b-boy would say, "This event is gonna be sooo flavooorrr."

OUR ONLY REACH GOAL: $3,500
Our original goal of $2,500 will support a significant portion of the costs of the event. However, reaching $3,500 will fully cover the event.
BEYOND $3,500...SUPPORT THE EDGE PROJECT!
We're not looking to make a profit from the event. If we reach $3,500, anything we get beyond that will be donated directly to THE EDGE PROJECT. The Edge Project is a local non-profit organization based out of Long Island, NY, where dancers such as our friend Daniel Rodriguez provide dance classes to underserved youth who would not otherwise be able to afford them.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Throwing a unique concept b-boy jam in New York City isn't easy. On a national scale, b-boys contend with the public's image of breakdancing as it is seen in mainstream media - as a flashy, choreographed dance battle. In contrast, NYC veteran b-boys are passionate about upholding the street culture that breakin' came from, keeping the dance serious and raw.
With Unlucky Breaks, we are walking a fine line between maintaining the utmost respect for our art form, and encouraging crowd-pleasing performance. Our main challenge is to ensure that our event allows b-boys and the community to come together on a fun, creative, and positive level.
To overcome this challenge, we're drawing on our experience in the b-boy scene, our own atypical styles of dancing, and lessons we've learned as professionals. When not dancing, we both work in the video games industry. Our backgrounds in game design have taught us that to make something fun and engaging, we need to put our ideas through rigorous testing. During the months leading up to Unlucky Breaks, we've been busy playtesting our concepts just as we would test our games at work. We make sure that each restriction on the Wheel of Misfortune allows b-boys to have fun and explore something they wouldn't otherwise try.
We can't do this without you! Thank you so much for supporting!
