Viaje meaning “trip” or “journey” alludes to the spiritual core of why we all ride a bike – to enjoy the journey.
What kind of bike is Viaje?
Imagine a road bike that you could ride anywhere? If you see a dirt road, take it. Come across a gravel path—explore it. Ride by some sweet single track? Go for it. Suddenly, without limitations you are free to ride wherever the road takes you, enabling you to find your cycling nirvana, that point on a ride when your head is perfectly clear and everything comes into focus. Reflect on a mountain top, meditate by a river, all knowing your Viaje brought you there.
Adventure. A powerful word that conjures up images of fantastic realities and stories that qualify as anything but ordinary. Adventure can take you places, it can take you far away from the day to day, to bring your 9-5 day dreams to life.
For many, few things offer as much adventure as a self propelled journey through your favorite roads, trails, and paths. Often, such journeys require the choice of a certain bike, one best individually suited to a specific route. However, it is when you remove any restrictions from where you can wander, that the adventure truly begins.
Volagi's latest creation, the Viaje, is meant to help you fulfill your need for adventure. More than just our latest bike though, the Viaje is a category defining bicycle that sets the stage for others to follow.
Viaje is journey. Journey means adventure.

What makes Viaje different?
Engineered for Adventure. Its steel frame borrows our patented Long Bow Flex Stay from our popular Liscio road bike, and capitalizes on the positive ride quality of both in combination with a tapered carbon fork to tame the harshest roads, washboard trails, and rough gravel. The frame also boasts a tapered head tube, and oversized BB386 Evo bottom bracket to get the most power transfer possible. Finally, a standard 27.2 seatpost allows you to pick and choose the best post that suits your needs.
Tires are capable of completely transforming how a bicycle performs, and with the Viaje you can take your pick. 25mm road tires for pavement duties? No problem. 42mm knobbies to tame the roughest single track and gravel? Have at it. You can even fit 32mm tires with full coverage fenders with the integrated rack and fender braze-ons. You're going to need more tires. But the Viaje is more than just clearance for bigger tires. Thanks to Barley's wizardry with the geometry of the Viaje, regardless of what tires you choose to run the Viaje handles like a dream. Quick, agile, intuitive, but still stable enough for long days in the saddle.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Volagi without the use of disc brakes. Disc brakes offer next level stopping power and control - which is critical when riding in mixed conditions you are likely to encounter on a Viaje. Fully compatible with mechanical or hydraulic systems, the Viaje offers confident control in any environment with the tire clearance to back it up. Get out there, go explore.
Why a steel bike?
Simple. Steel is real. As cheesy as that saying is, it holds a lot of truth. Those who have ridden a steel bike already know, but for those that haven't - Steel has an intrinsically great ride quality thanks to a number of factors. Stonger tubing means you can use smaller diameter tubes which result in a more compliant ride. Careful selection of tubing for both models of the Viaje, along with the road taming performance of our Long Bow Flex Stays results in a supreme ride. Steel, only better.
Steel is also extremely durable, which is especially important when you're exploring uncharted territory on your Viaje, or locking it up to a bike rack downtown. When cared for properly, steel frames can last a lifetime! Many of us at Volagi still have our first bikes that happen to be steel.
Don't get us wrong, there is absolutely still a time and place for carbon - just look at the Liscio. However, for an adventure bike like the Viaje, steel is the perfect material for the right blend of performance, ride quality, durability, and weight.
The steel chosen for both the SL and the XL has been hand picked to ensure the best possible bike for each model. At the top of the line, the Viaje SL will be manufactured with Columbus' Spirit triple butted tubing which is known for its incredibly high strength to weight ratio. Our premium Viaje deserves premium tubing. Meanwhile, the XL Viaje will be constructed from high end 4130 Chromoly double butted steel tubing. The XL will still have the ride you would expect from a Volagi, though it will end up slightly heavier than the SL. Both versions of the Viaje frame will be manufactured in Taiwan and then shipped to our headquarters in Cotati, Ca for final assembly.

Viaje Geometry
In order to maintain the fun, fast, but stable handling you have come to love from the Liscio, the geometry of the Viaje is very similar with slightly longer chainstays and a curved seat tube for tire clearance. The end result is a bike that is equally at home off road, as well as on. The Viaje is not a cross bike, gravel bike, rando bike, touring bike, or a road bike. The Viaje is whatever you want it to be.

Both the Viaje XL and SL frames and complete bikes will initially be available in the three colors shown above: Blue, Cream, and Red.

Specifications are subject to change. Which isn't a bad thing, for instance, check out the prototype fork for the Viaje. The bikes above are pictured with an off the shelf fork for the sake of having a complete bike to ride. The actual fork? Well, it's a work of art with all of the features you have come to expect from Volagi.
Kickstarter Only: The Viaje XL Framesets and Completes will ship with the upgraded, full carbon Viaje SL fork!

Granted, this is an early sample but this is what you can expect the Viaje to be equipped with. Forward facing dropouts, aggressive skewer retention, hidden fender eyelets, and a clean brake cable/hose routing down the back of the fork leg slightly to the inside. The Viaje's fork is completely our design (like all of our products) and completes the bike.

Why a Kickstarter?
The point of the Viaje Kickstarter is for you to help us get the Viaje into production as fast as possible, and to allow you to be part of the process of bringing the Viaje to life. More than just helping us, you'll be able to take advantage of this one time only Kickstarter Pricing on a Viaje. You have a chance to be the first to experience the cycling freedom a Viaje offers firsthand, and you'll be able to say that you helped make the Viaje a reality.

FAQ

Thanks for bringing that up, we definitely should have specified it more clearly. The Production version will have full brake and shift cable housing that runs against the down tube. They will be held in place by 3 bolt on cable guides (pictured on the blue Viaje). More than just better looks, the cable system allows for either mechanical or hydraulic brakes, fully sealed shift cables for improved performance in the muck, and provides for a clean top tube so shouldering your bike for cross or portaging is more comfy.
-
At this point we are comfortable stating that it will fit up to 700x42c tires, but we are repositioning the chainstay bridge on the production model, which should increase clearance even further, so there is a possibility for 700x45 (maybe).
-
Mostly, yes. The frames share the same design with the exception of the steel chosen. However, the retail versions will ship with two different forks - Carbon legs with AL steerer on the XL, and a full carbon fork on the SL. But, for the KickStarter we are offering a free upgrade on the XL frames and complete bikes to the full carbon fork on the SL.
-
Sorry, no plans for internal Di2 just yet. You would be able to run external Di2 of course. Currently, we won't be able to offer 3 water bottle cages but we will keep it in mind for the future.
-
Yes, the rear derailleur hanger will be replaceable.
-
Both the XL and SL frame modules will include the Frame, Fork, Headset, Seatpost clamp, and a replaceable SS derailleur hanger. The frames will NOT include a Bottom Bracket or compression plug for the carbon fork.
The BB386 Evo bottom bracket uses the same parts as a PressFit30 bottom bracket. This and the compression plug can be found or ordered at just about any local bike shop -
As of right now, the plan is for rear rack (and fender) braze ons down by the dropouts, with the expectation that for racks you will need to use a center stay and mount to what would be the brake mount on the brake bridge (if it had rim brakes). We have done plenty of testing with this set up with up to 50 pounds without any issues. The front fork will have hidden fender mounts as well, which also aren't shown on the sample forks.
-
The Viaje is built around normal road q-factor cranks but you could run MTB cranks as well.
-
All geos are based on Vittoria Rubino Pro 28C tires (about 682mm total diameter).
Viaje Standover Heights: 50cm - 756mm 53cm - 781mm 55cm - 800mm 57cm - 825mm 60cm - 858mm 63cm - 890mm
-
At this time we have no plans to offer a belt drive. It would be a cool feature, but belt drives require there to be a split somewhere in the frame to allow the belt to be installed (you can't break a belt like a chain). The first generation of the Viaje will not have this, so it will not be able to accommodate it.
-
We're sure it would be possible, but we haven't tested a front rack mounted in that manner so we will have to say no at this time to prevent voiding the warranty. We have toyed with the idea of a steel fork in the future, which would likely include front rack mounts however.
-
Yes, we will be able and have the Apex kit as well as options for wheelsets which you’ll be able to purchase directly from us.
-
Complete bike weight as ESTIMATED:
XL, Apex – 19.6 lbs. ( 8.9 kg.)
SL, Ultegra – 18.5 lbs. (8.4 kg) -
There are some excellent BB386 cranks on the market that allow you to take full advantage of the wider shell, with a 30mm spindle. However, you can still run (mountain or road) Hollowtech II, GXP cranksets, or Campy cranks with adapters from FSA.
-
The fender mounts will be hidden inside the fork leg about 4-5 inches up from the dropout just like our Liscio. This allows the fender struts on just about any fender to clear the disc brake caliper.
-
Unfortunately, at this time we have no plans at this time to offer a coupled frame. Since it is steel, there are frame builders who could possibly add couplers retroactively, though we can't guarantee it will work.

What makes the Viaje different or better than a road bike, or a cross bike, or even a mountain bike?
There is something magical that happens when you no longer have any restrictions to where you can ride - and ride comfortably.
I can leave my house and go for a nice ~20 mile road ride, on a bike that handles like an awesome road bike, to a local mountain bike trail. Once there, if I feel like it I can hop on the single track and rip around, on a bike that handles better than any cross bike, with all the comfort and control I need to have fun with skinny(er) tires on dirt.
From there, it's back to the pavement for another 20 miles home. But maybe I come across a gravel road on the way back. Why not take that?
With a bike like the Viaje it is like riding in a Choose Your Own Adventure book. Nothing except your imagination will hold you back. The point of the Viaje is not to replace a full suspension mountain bike, or a racing road bike, but to offer a bike that is built for adventure.
Go explore. Stop for a burrito and a coke at the local dive. Keep exploring. Don't let your bike hold you back. -
Interbike! If you'll be at Interbike, so will we - Booth #11145!

Any rack will work since the brake caliper is on the chainstay . Disc specific racks are for the more common seatstay mounted calipers.
For now we should recommend the single strut racks. Reasons: this is a lightweight frame not intended for heavy loaded touring. Plus the geometry and short chainstays.
Also racks like the ones from Tubus or the Axiom Streamliner which have about 4cm of rearward offset will help provide more heel clearance for panniers.
