The Tale of the Ravens is an illustrated story - words by Caitlín R. Kiernan, & paintings by Kathryn A. Pollnac.
History: In 2007, I created a series of four paper-clay raven dolls. My partner, author Caitlín R. Kiernan, wrote a poem to accompany the ravens, which were then auctioned on eBay.

In the late spring of 2010, I painted the first in a series of raven paintings, inspired by the raven dolls I’d made three years earlier. At the time, I thought that first painting would be the only one I’d do. But over the last few months, I've made at least a dozen more, most of which I’ve sold. During this time, bits of narrative about the four ravens has grown out of conversations between me and Caitlín, gradually coalescing into a full-fledged story, The Tale of the Ravens (working title). I would love the opportunity to be able to paint and share that tale with others. Caitlín has suggested that she write the accompanying text, making this our first truly collaborative effort.
The Tale of the Ravens Project: I intend to create 8 -10 paintings much like the ones shown above, which will serve as the illustrations for our raven story.
Instead of a traditional bound book, the printed pages will be presented in a handmade loose-leaf folio, which will include a title page and acknowledgment page. This format will allow the potential owner of the "book" the option of framing favorite illustrations.
A small, hand-bound, text-only book will be produced, as well, to compliment the illustrated version. Both the folio book and text-only chapbook will be offered in signed and numbered limited editions. Because we are printing these ourselves, from home, the editions will be extremely limited.
How Your Donations Will Be Used: Your funding goes towards the purchase of everything necessary for us to complete this project. This includes: 1. The purchase of a printer that uses pigment inks, enabling us to produce archival prints. 2. Any necessary design software (Photoshop CS5, etc.). 3. A flat-bed scanner. 4. Any new art supplies I may need to purchase. 5. Sufficient ink and archival-grade paper to produce the book, along with any and all prints owed as rewards to those who help fund this project, as well as any ink and paper lost while calibrating the colors to match my paintings. 6. Also included is the cost of packing materials and postage, so that we may cover the expense of sending out the finished product.
