Two Brooklyn neighborhoods are working to convert a shuttered firehouse into a one-of-a-kind center for art and community service.
We are building a headquarters for North Brooklyn's creative community
Brooklyn’s Greenpoint and Williamsburg neighborhoods are building a center for the arts in North Brooklyn to showcase the area's vibrant cultural community for generations to enjoy, while also protecting its residents from rapid change brought on by re-zonings and a population explosion over the last decade.
The Northside Town Hall Community and Cultural Center project will keep the area’s activist spirit and artistic soul alive by preserving a meaningful part of the neighborhood's history: its beloved firehouse, Engine 212.
The cultural and community headquarters will both share the work of the neighborhood's talented artists with performance and gallery space, and house the civic organizations that protect their rights as residents—allowing Greenpoint and Williamsburg to continue to be cultivators of and home to the nation’s most exciting new and established musicians, artists and dancers for years to come.
A center to protect their art, history & homes
Engine 212 was home to one of the more significant demonstrations in New York's history in 1975, when Greenpoint and Williamsburg residents flooded the firehouse by the hundreds and occupied it for 16 months to keep it from being closed by the City. It remained open until recently when it was finally shuttered for good—but we aim to save it along with the area’s artistic community as a symbol of Brooklyn’s cultural heritage.
The project has already received significant support from private donors and pledges of government funding that would pay for most of the Town Hall’s construction costs. In order to raise more funds, we’ve also started an annual event called Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint that brings together dozens of Brooklyn’s best restaurants for an afternoon of food and live music on the waterfront.
But we need your help to secure the last piece of our fundraising in order to make the Town Hall happen. And, by the way: It's tax-deductible!
Special thank you gifts for your soul & your stomach
We’re happy to say that your generosity through Kickstarter will also be rewarded with more than just the satisfaction of protecting one of the country’s cultural centers (and the tax write-off that goes with it after Kickstarter and credit card fees are deducted). A small donation at the Patron or Supporter level (under $50) will get you first dibs on events programming during our inaugural arts season, a ticket to our Groundbreaking Gala and recognition on our Web site's List of Supporters.
Donations of between $50 and $250 will get you various levels of admission to Taste on September 9th, including food and drinks for you, for you and a friend, or VIP access to an exclusive area of the event and unlimited eats. At $500 and more, you get all that and tickets to our inaugural arts performance following the renovation of the Town Hall.
Finally, a $10,000 donation makes you an official Founder of the Town Hall with permanent recognition at the building site.
Thank you so much for your help. We hope to see you at the Town Hall and Taste!
