11 drag queen, 15 numbers, 144 costume changes, 1 hour.
The money raised from Kickstarter will be the start of our touring budget. We wanna hit up the east coast of the United States, and make the leap to Europe, bringing San Francisco's experimental drag aesthetic to the worlds. Some of the funds will be used for purchasing costumes and props for the show.
The first version of our touring show will be mounted at CounterPULSE (Mission @9th Street) in SF, CA on Friday July 29th and Saturday July 30th. For tickets please visit www.counterpulse.org
11 solo fringe performers of different traditions, aesthetic styless, and techniques come together to create a huge collaborative 1 hour group performance. Showcasing some of San Francisco’s most talented and diverse drag performers WORK MORE! rides the line between theater performance and nightlife spectacle. Incorporating live singing, lipsynching, dancing, stilt walking, high drag, nakedness, and good old fashioned camp the cast is creating a show distinctly San Francisco with the intention to tour to Europe and the East Coast next year. The tour will expose us to other queer communities/audiences/performers, where we will forge live 3d relationships (as opposed to internet relations) that will strengthen the ties between our San Francisco based queer families and those of other cities, and hopefully lead to a sharing of techniques, traditions and histories.
While WORK MORE! results in a grand performance it has social goals as well. As queers our history is often not tracable through bloodlines, or even through the written word. A vast marjority of queer histories and traditions must be claimed, and created. An obvious and persevering queer tradition is drag performance. Through the formation of chosen drag families (from tight knit, to looser associations) the techniques and concepts of drag making are shared, as are stories and oral histories. Drag Queens, being public and social performance makers, have access to many gay community members socially and personally, essentially making them the story tellers and keepers of queer communities. By bringing together this diverse and unique group of individuals I hope to cross pollinate between our different traditions and share stories and histories, thusly strengthening our greater communiites.
