FREE CANDY is a mixed-use art and performance space where emerging and established artists across all disciplines are invited to showcase their work.
Hi. My name is Todd and love music, art and candy! In 2007, I attempted to open a live music and arts space in my neighborhood – Ft. Greene, Brooklyn. After two years of blood, sweat, tears, demolition, politicking, licenses, certificates and every penny to my name, the space was seized by the City of New York via Eminent Domain - four weeks from opening. They preferred another condo to what would have been the neighborhoods only live music and arts space. After the legal fight of my life, I became the poster child for evils of Eminent Domain, and then everyone moved on...
So here I am, three years later, undeterred, reloaded and even more determined to bring my idea…now my dream...to life! The name of that dream is now called FREE CANDY, a mixed-used music venue, arts space and dance studio in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn featuring live music, film, dance, visual art and theatrical performances. Clinton Hill, as well as the surrounding neighborhoods of Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, Prospect Heights and Fort Greene are still in dire need live music, dance, film and art spaces. FREE CANDY will fill that void with sweetness!
FREE CANDY will be a place where anything is possible; where hidden talent will let us in on their amazing secrets; where local visual artists can showcase their vision of the world as only they see it; and where established acts get to cook up new recipes and share them in an intimate gathering with friends. FREE CANDY will essentially be a laboratory where art and music, in all their various forms, values and permutations converge and are formed into sweet delights that give flavor to our universe.
But, it’s kind of hard to do it all by myself. Especially twice! This is where you come in. If you love music and the arts as much as I do and believe that it can change the world for the better, making it a much richer place – or if you just love a good comeback story and perseverance - please support FREE CANDY anyway you can. I have no doubt that together we can create something magical and sweet!
Your support for FREE CANDY will be applied in three phases:
• PHASE 1 :: Venue - initial rental costs, fit-out, sound & lighting
• PHASE 2 :: Licenses and Certificates - Certificate of Occupancy, Cabaret/Live Performance License, Wine and Beer License
• PHASE 3 :: Activation - Program development and promotion, Artist recruitment and booking
Thank you for your time and support of FREE CANDY. I hope to see you in the FREE CANDY world very soon!
