Update #1: Our backers are the bee's knees

Posted on September 24, 2011

Picture us spreading our rusty sheet metal arms and giving you all a great big Makeshift hug. Sorry about that, it's all out of love.

Thanks to you, we hit our goal within the first half of our campaign. With more than two weeks left to go, we have raised nearly $30,000 from almost 400 backers. Needless to say, we are totally stoked!

We are indebted to those who donated, promoted, interviewed, live televisioned, social networked, and emailed. In return we vow to produce the best documentation of street-level ingenuity around the world in, well, the world. Now that we've recovered some of our costs from Issue One: Re-culture and have some some cash to put towards developing the business side of Makeshift, we ask that you continue to support our campaign so we can build out the necessary infrastructure to keep the exploration and production churning. After releasing Issue One, we'll start to expand our editorial staff and contributors, create more online multimedia content, grow our infrastructural departments, and get to work on Issue Two: Mobility.

Our small team has been overwhelmed keeping on top of everything, so apologies if an email or two has slipped through the cracks. We're currently gearing up full throttle for our launch just one week from today. Check www.mkshft.org next Friday and follow us on Facebook and Twitter at @mkshftmag.

We look forward to getting copies in your hands and launching our website. But this is just the starting point; there are many different directions Makeshift can go from here. Your feedback so far has been invaluable. Please continue to let us know how you want to see Makeshift collect and tell stories of the world's hidden creativity.

Many thanks,

The Makeshift Team

This project is inspired and inspiring for all ages -- congratulations! Great work, Steve. Looks like a cresting wave across cultures for sustainable design, invention and enterprise. It's a thrill to see your network growing so fast. There are several related KS projects who might be nodes in that network -- three I've talked to. I'm tweeting about the launch party next Friday and look forward to meeting you and hundreds more at the Expo!

Is there anyway we can contribute more than just donating $?

At the fab Makeshift launch party last night in Providence Steve told me he'll need volunteers to help -- the campaign is now at $45K! Many issues to send to backers. Tweet your heart out, spread the word, FB news and watch the sites for developments. send him email here. (A few ideas until he gets some sleep.)
