Hi, I’m John Davey - jazz bassist, composer and educator, living in the beautiful Northern Catskills of New York State. I want to talk to you about my latest recording project and ask for your support in making it a reality. The recording (my fifth), titled “OPEN RANGE”, features a collection of tunes that I have written in the past couple of years. The music ranges from pastoral Americana, to slammin’ funk, to mellow blues to wide open rides of serious improv.

Joining me on this recording are two fabulous musicians from the fertile Hudson Valley of New York, drummer Dean Sharp and guitarist Ken McGloin. I first played with Dean and Ken last year at a concert series that I produce at SUNY Oneonta, called The Jazz Composers & Improvisors Project. I immediately felt a strong connection with them from the first piece we played that night.  Their musical personalities are so strong and unique that I knew they were the right guys for the recording that I was planning.

Dean Sharp, aside from being a total groovemeister on all things percussion, is a composer and producer as well, and brings his creative energy to everything we play. Ken McGloin is a “sound sculptor” on guitar and his improv skills are huge. His range is unlimited - from melodic jazz stylings, to raunchy rock and funk, to sweet country licks. He is a master of effects, and uses them in total service to the music.

I’m really excited about this recording! If the rehearsal tapes are any indication, this will be a special CD, full of memorable melodies, hip improvisations and a great vibe. We will be recording in early March at Dean’s studio, The Elbow Project Room, in Kingston, NY. Did I mention that D# is also a fantastic recording engineer? There you go. I’m taking care of all design elements of the CD. Did I mention that I’m also a graphic designer and have designed all of my previous CD’s? There you go again. I’m planning a release of late April.

To make this happen, I’m asking for your support. Any and all pledges, big and small, will go towards the completion of the recording sessions, including musicians fees, mixing and mastering, and the final pressing and production of physical CD’s. I’m setting a modest goal to make this a reality. THIS PROJECT WILL NOT BE FUNDED UNLESS WE REACH OUR GOAL BY THE DEADLINE! The deadline is March 21, the first day of Spring (and my birthday!)
