Meet Daniel, Ogre Line Editor

Update #54 · Sep 17, 2012 · 9 comments

Hi everyone, I'm Daniel, the new Ogre Line Editor (read: dogsbody, aide-de-camp, and general lackey for all things Ogre).

I signed up in the wake of the hugely successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year -- the position literally exists because of your support! Some of you may also know me as one of the organizers of the $3K Mercenary Counter Sheets.

I'm currently a part-time contractor based in Cambridge, UK, but the wheels are in motion for a move to Ogre Command in Austin later this year.

It's my job to serve all you Ogre fans out there as best as I can. Right now, that means helping to get Ogre Designer's Edition to print, and into the hands of you Kickstarter supporters!

In the past month or two I've assisted Steve with unit stats (like the Doppelsoldner, and the special variant Missile GEV on one of the $4.5K sponsor sheets), proofed over a thousand counters, checked the Pocket Ogre rulebook, run competitions at Continuum and Congenial, become a moderator for the Ogre boards, and helped with a dozen other things. I'm loving every minute of it!

Besides my lifelong passion for board games, an interest in history (I majored in Classical Studies) and a background in teaching, writing, and editing help me out as I learn on the job. I enjoy all kinds of games, but my special loves are wargames and thematic games.

Guess what? Ogre -- along with other scifi games like Battletech -- is to me the perfect blend of the two. I love the rich and imaginative background universes which provide the backdrop for the action. I'm also active on BoardGameGeek as "Talorien." Feel free to add me as a GeekBuddy, and I'll return the favor!

-- Daniel Jew

Phil Reed Talks Ogre With BGG (With The Enormous Box!)

Update #53 · Sep 12, 2012 · 8 comments

W. Eric Martin spoke with our inestimable Phil Reed on behalf of BoardGameGeek at Gen Con this year. In the interview, Phil discusses some of the challenges of getting an ambitious project like Ogre to completion, and shows off some cool prototypes!

Our thanks to BGG for the interview, and check out some of BGG's other Gen Con 2012 coverage.

Skeleton Crew at Ogre Central

Update #52 · Aug 14, 2012 · 500 comments

Many of the SJ Games crew will be at GenCon, and they'll have a lot of prototype material with them, so if you're at the show, check it out!

Sadly, I will not be there to see your reaction (but please post it for me). I'll be right here in Austin running another check on the rulebook and gathering my strength for the World SF Convention in Chicago at the end of the month.

Here's an Easter egg for those still reading the updates. Want to name one last Ogre? This is not a contest; it's a challenge. Amuse me. Post a comment to this update and suggest a silly, snarky, sardonic, or horrifying Ogre name of no more than four characters. Examples of names that have already amused me include 8U, L33T, DOOM, and KNE (that last one WAS a sponsor suggestion, and now KNE is a III-B).

A really good in-joke might work too. One of our Ogres is named 923K. Let's see who figures that one out first.

At whatever point I cut it off - and it will be soon - if somebody's offered an idea that I like better than the name I was ABOUT to write onto the last counter sheet, I'll use it.

- Steve Jackson

PS - the one and only Ninja to be published with this run is on one of the BGG sheets, and if you get over to BGG really fast, you can get in on the naming thread there: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/841839/name-the-ninja

Sponsorship at this level will improve the rulebook by letting us hire a fantastic illustrator to do some character images. The $335 level . . . PLUS our artist, working from your photo, will put you into rulebook illustrations, and your name will appear in the credits. Depending on your own look and your preferences, you might be an officer, a trooper, a tanker, a refugee, a civilian leader, a technician . . . (Okay, at this level we will ship your game anywhere.)

You are sponsoring a whole 8" x 10” counter sheet, which will go into every copy of the game. We’ll work with you to determine what goes on the sheet and how it will be colored. The unit design will have to fit Ogre canon (no clown faces on the Superheavy Tanks, no overt advertising on the Ogres . . .) but that still leaves a lot of leeway. Your name will go on the sheet as sponsor, and we’ll send you at least a dozen extra copies of the sheet. This also includes everything at the $100 level. (Again, shipped anywhere.)

Your own exclusive 8" x 10” counter sheet. Want an Ogre with your logo on it? Want a squadron of pink GEVs? No problem. We’ll work with you on colors, design, and choice of dies. You’ll also be able to print your logo, name, or other stuff on the margins of the sheet. This could be a promo item for a convention, distributor, or big retail store. These sheets won’t go into the actual game. We will ship you at least 3,000. We’ll own the remaining copies but (unless you wish otherwise) they’ll stay in our warehouse for at least a year after the new Ogre game is released. If you want to resell your sheets, rather than just give them away, you’ll have to sign a licensing agreement to use the Ogre name and images, but that won’t cost you extra. This also includes everything at the $100 level. (Shipping free in the US. You will pay actual shipping costs outside the US.)

Your own exclusive 10.5 x 17.125” counter sheet. You must use one of our existing dies; your best choices are Combine armor, Paneuro armor, or a sheet full of Ogres. Time is short, so you must either provide your own art to our specs, or make the "paint" job simple. You’ll still be able to print your logo, name, or other stuff on the margins of the sheet. These sheets won’t go into the actual game. We will ship you at least 3,000. We’ll own the remaining copies but (unless you wish otherwise) they’ll stay in our warehouse for at least a year after the new Ogre game is released. Your Own Ogre Convention. Steve Jackson will attend your 2-day Ogre event anywhere in the US or Canada (you can ask about other locations, but no promises!). You will need to cover Steve’s hotel and travel costs separately, and dates have to fit his existing commitments, so factor that in, and please talk to Steve directly (post a comment with your contact info) before you pledge! You also get four copies of the Kickstarter edition, your choice of $600 worth of Ogre swag or extras, and naming rights to one Ogre in the Designer's Edition as described for the $200 level. Steve will bring a large stack of party favors (including three of our prototype 3-D Ogres which you can use as prizes), run events, talk about upcoming projects, sign things, and other general convention stuff. Or you can do it as a house party and only invite a few people. Your call.
