We've launched an exciting new project of our own! Introducing the Kickstarter app for iPhone!

Funded! This project successfully raised its funding goal on May 11, 2012.

A Toy That Makes Toys

Update #60 · Oct 24, 2012 · 18 comments

We just supported the Form 1 project. If you want to get in on this 3-D printing system, you've got a bit less than a day. The project closes early Friday morning. It's already massively over goal: they were looking for $100K, and they've already broken $2.5 million.

Supporting this takes “giving back” a step farther. It’s supporting another Kickstarter project . . . to get a tool that will help us fulfill the stretch goals that you supported for Ogre!

So at some point we’ll be showing you some 3-D plastic tanks, and probably Car Wars cars too. And they’ll be built with a machine that was Kickstarted. A virtuous circle!

Per Laird's comment - the Form 1 is very definitely a prototyper and not a production machine. Slow and expensive! So plastic OGRE vehicles directly from this machine are a possibility . . . but only for MEEEEEE, hahahaha . . .

But we will play with it and learn.

So now plastic vehicles for OGRE are a posibility.

The Form 1 (and other similar devices, such as the B9, which was also kickstarted) are amazing - the resolution is stunning, but I've been researching them. They're very tempting, so I've seen both Form 1 and B9 in person. UV resin printers have a few drawbacks: they are very slow (1 cm/hour) - it takes hours to print even small things, and the operating costs are very high - the UV cured resin costs about 5x the cost of filament used by extrusion 3D printers. So while I think that UV/resin printing is ultimately going to be amazing, right now it's in the early days, and I'm going to wait for the resin to get cheaper, and for there to be more resin options, both of which I hope will be addressed as the market matures. Still, if you have the money, the Form 1 would be a fantastic device!\! The new Makerbot Replicator 2 is also very good resolution (they claim 100 microns, but it's configurable, and likely can go to 10 microns if you're so inclined), and much cheaper and faster printing, larger build area, etc.. So not _quite_ as good resolution as UV Resin, but $30-45/kg beats $190/kg, at least for me. Still, for gaming mineatures, UV resin printing would be awesome!

Thanks for the tip on this. I have been eyeing Makerbots but didn't really like the quality and figured you have to spend 10 grand on a nice #D printer to really be in the game. This is worth the shot, so I am in.

Notice how Form 1 has staggered delivery dates based on their production capacity. Nice!

I wish that project had run a year earlier - just think how the Designer's Edition could have been with 3D models throughout (and at a slightly smaller scale for backers who don't have house extensions to dedicate to Ogre-orabilia).

There seem to be glut of 3D Printer projects on Kickstarter at the moment (see http://kck.st/Nei9Ge and http://kck.st/PcAcyu for 2 more) with prices creeping down so the next Designer's Edition project may be able to include one with the "custom" pledge levels.

      Talarius - Prototyping only.

Kokido - Interesting question, which gets into issues that (so far) fall into my personal abyss of ignorance. I will know more after we play with the Form 1!

John Fiala - You are gracious. And realistic :) And we're late even by your standards, but we're moving forward.

Christopher Boothe - No, nothing from the Form 1 is required to get our initial Ogre material off to print. We're looking at it for follow-on stuff.

Is this something Steve Jackson would use to make masters, or actual final product? Seems like it isn't meant for mass production.

Creator Christopher Agro on October 24, 2012

@Christopher Boothe Haha, I get it, cause delay's suck. But in all seriousness it sounds like that would be used in the development of the "Ogre Miniatures" and "Car Wars" not anything to do with the current state of the Ogre KS edition, since there are no "3D" Models, just cardboard pieces.

I was checking out the Form 1 Kickstarter and am very impressed with the machine, and would love one myself if i was a 3d product designer.

Well, consider the delays that your oversuccess have imposed on the Ogre project, and expect something similar to happen to Form 1. I wish them all the luck, but there's a reason I don't consider a Kickstarter overdue until two months after the estimated delivery date. :)

I'd love a 3D printer of my own, but the Form 1 is a bit pricey for me.

You are sponsoring a whole 8" x 10” counter sheet, which will go into every copy of the game. We’ll work with you to determine what goes on the sheet and how it will be colored. The unit design will have to fit Ogre canon (no clown faces on the Superheavy Tanks, no overt advertising on the Ogres . . .) but that still leaves a lot of leeway. Your name will go on the sheet as sponsor, and we’ll send you at least a dozen extra copies of the sheet. This also includes everything at the $100 level. (Again, shipped anywhere.)

You’ll also be able to print your logo, name, or other stuff on the margins of the sheet. This could be a promo item for a convention, distributor, or big retail store. These sheets won’t go into the actual game. We will ship you at least 3,000. We’ll own the remaining copies but (unless you wish otherwise) they’ll stay in our warehouse for at least a year after the new Ogre game is released. If you want to resell your sheets, rather than just give them away, you’ll have to sign a licensing agreement to use the Ogre name and images, but that won’t cost you extra.
