FINALLY! International Shirts and Stuff!
We were on “That’s How We Roll” last week, and we’re not sure we pointed to it! So there it is.
A Firm Note on Customs
We are getting the inevitable suggestions that we should understate the value of international shipments, or misrepresent the contents on customs forms. One word: No. We assume that all international supporters are familiar with their nation’s fees and practices. Please plan for your tax office to make its usual assessment, whatever that is. We won’t fudge the paperwork.
But, Having Said That, Here’s the Partial Solution for International Swag
Ritual abasements, all, for taking so long to come to this clunky and incomplete solution! It covers most things, and it reduces the shipping cost for the shirts, pins, and dice that we were already offering to international supporters.
We have added three Extras, each representing a different-sized USPS Flat Rate box. Each has two costs: one for Canada/Mexico, and the other for Everyplace Else in the World.
If you add one of these USPS boxes as an Extra, that covers postage on whatever we can stuff into it. Some things we know we can get into each USPS box will be listed under each Extra.
IMPORTANT. You can put ITEMS in a box that were formerly listed as U.S. only, but you cannot put “pledge levels” in the box. So you cannot, for instance, pledge $100 for just the game, and add a USPS box, because the game box will not FIT in a USPS box. And, sadly, we are not sure that the “swag” part of “the game plus the swag” will fit even in a large USPS box, because the canvas bag is so bulky. We just plain do not recommend the bag to our international buyers. We trust the factory to make and print a quality bag, but we do not know how small it will fold!
Note also that if we end up offering patches, we’ll be able to add at least 3 to ANY box. They are small and flat.
This is an imperfect solution, because (a) the Counter Set is NOT available under this system, because we still don’t know what its volume will be, and we fear it will exceed the largest of the USPS boxes!
And (b) the Ogre Canvas Bag is very bulky - canvas is like that. Shipping it outside North America will cost you more than the bag itself costs! We may have to make a deal with Pegasus to send a hundred bags to Essen, or something like that, so Europe can get some . . .
And (c), there may be some last-minute extras added that will strain this system further. (cough) shotglasses (cough)
But it’s what we’ve got, and we hope that, at the very least, it helps get some shirts and (red and blue!) dice to our international supporters.

You are sponsoring a whole 8" x 10” counter sheet, which will go into every copy of the game. We’ll work with you to determine what goes on the sheet and how it will be colored. The unit design will have to fit Ogre canon (no clown faces on the Superheavy Tanks, no overt advertising on the Ogres . . .) but that still leaves a lot of leeway. Your name will go on the sheet as sponsor, and we’ll send you at least a dozen extra copies of the sheet. This also includes everything at the $100 level. (Again, shipped anywhere.)

Your own exclusive 8" x 10” counter sheet. Want an Ogre with your logo on it? Want a squadron of pink GEVs? No problem. We’ll work with you on colors, design, and choice of dies. You’ll also be able to print your logo, name, or other stuff on the margins of the sheet. This could be a promo item for a convention, distributor, or big retail store. These sheets won’t go into the actual game. We will ship you at least 3,000. We’ll own the remaining copies but (unless you wish otherwise) they’ll stay in our warehouse for at least a year after the new Ogre game is released. If you want to resell your sheets, rather than just give them away, you’ll have to sign a licensing agreement to use the Ogre name and images, but that won’t cost you extra. This also includes everything at the $100 level. (Shipping free in the US. You will pay actual shipping costs outside the US.)

Your Own Ogre Convention. Steve Jackson will attend your 2-day Ogre event anywhere in the US or Canada (you can ask about other locations, but no promises!). You will need to cover Steve’s hotel and travel costs separately, and dates have to fit his existing commitments, so factor that in, and please talk to Steve directly (post a comment with your contact info) before you pledge! You also get four copies of the Kickstarter edition, your choice of $600 worth of Ogre swag or extras, and naming rights to one Ogre in the Designer's Edition as described for the $200 level. Steve will bring a large stack of party favors (including three of our prototype 3-D Ogres which you can use as prizes), run events, talk about upcoming projects, sign things, and other general convention stuff. Or you can do it as a house party and only invite a few people. Your call.

What Arthur is saying may work for PBS pledge drives. I don't think Kickstarter can put themselves in the same category as a non-profit. SJG has some lawyers don't mess with them. The Secret Service tried and had Bad Stuff™ happen to them.
Creator Nicholas Sylvain-Obsidian Tormentor on May 11, 2012
speaking as a real lawyer, I'd say SJ is being sensible. Too much at stake to play those kind of games.
Creator Steve Jackson Games on May 10, 2012
Arthur - I could not disagree more and am not volunteering either my staff or our supporters as the test case. If that theory were to fly, every exporter in the country would start taking "pledges" tomorrow.

As a hard core rules lawyer, Postal Worker, and kickstarter supporter of more then 30 projects. I would say that the rewards are just that, rewards for backing the project. You are not buying an item or pre-ordering it. You are helping to get a project off the ground and then getting a thank you "Gift" for your support. So all that said I really don't see the problem with marking the custom form with gift cause of the way this whole kickstarter program is set up. Just my two cents.
Creator AstralWanderer on May 10, 2012
Oh my, looks like most overseas buyers will have to recalculate their pledges with the shipping price changes - though it's nice to see them go down! I pity whoever at SJG is going to have to handle the order details, since there'll doubtless be plenty who pledged too much (and I bet SJ himself will have too sore a wrist from all those certificates to help much, yuk yuk).
One question about customs declarations - I'm not asking SJG to understate order values but could we have confirmation that they will only include the retail value of the items, and not the amount paid for shipping as well? (paying VAT/duty on postage would add insult to injury).
Creator Michael Malin on May 10, 2012

This is crossposted, apologies, but I want to maximise the chance of Steve or Fox seeing it before the proposal gets made official:
.
@Steve: Debugging the shipping proposal. There is one thing that's not clear. In (4) would the reduction in the Medium and Large box costs be for all international shipments or just for the backers who also pledged for a game?
.
It's not clear whether (4) continues the proposal from (2) and (3), or whether it stands alone.
Creator KevinR on May 9, 2012
Steve posted the following in the main comment thread. Please comment there.
"POSTED FOR COMMENT - NOT REAL YET - PLEASE HELP DEBUG . . .
Attempts to reconcile shipping and honor past postings, even the one that came out wrong:
(1) Small box shipping to “Everywhere Else” will be $15, not the previously announced $17. Already made that change. Except:
(2) If you order a game overseas, and the only extras you order are pins, dice, and the Ogre Supporter T-shirt, and we can get your stuff into a Small flat rate box, shipping is free. The extras do have to be a separate shipment; we can’t get them into the carton with the game, but we won’t charge for that shipment. And:
(3) I won’t be mean about patches (which are not yet listed as Extras, but will be). If you are getting a free-shipping Small Box as above and throw in no more than four patches, which take almost no space, shipping will still be free.
(4) So as not to appear to penalize the people who wanted other things, I’ll drop the Large and Medium flat rate charges by $10 each."
Creator Graham Brand on May 9, 2012
@Rob Farley: You've probably noticed Steve's new update with some proposals that look very generous to me. Just one quick point about your post above. You mention that you can't afford an additional $48. That suggests that you were thinking of getting extras that wouldn't fit in the small box. The offer in Update #13 was specifically for the original supporters' shirt, dice and pins, not for anything larger.
It's only the introduction of the Medium and Large boxes that has made it possible for us to get things like counter sheets. Hope this helps.
Creator Rob Farley on May 9, 2012
Yes, I've found that now. I'd point out that his reply was posted a long time after both my initial comments and followup on this update, and Steve still appears confused when Ola has quoted the exact same comment that I did.
Creator Joshua Megerman on May 9, 2012
FYI - SJ posted a response in the general comments tab.
Creator Rob Farley on May 9, 2012
@Ola: Thanks for the information. Incredibly disappointed that they've gone back on their previous promise. Also incredibly disappointed that I couldn't get an answer direct from SJ. The fact that there's STILL nothing on here clarifying that position is just crap. It's a good job I'm keeping up to date on this project, otherwise I wouldn't have known that the promise that was in effect when I pledged had been cancelled with no notice.
I haven't cancelled my support outright (although I did consider it) but I have cancelled the extra I pledged for bonus kit. There's no way I can afford another $48 out of the blue like that.
Creator Allen F. Schell on May 9, 2012
Dice question -- Will the black dice also be available or just the red and blue? Personally I am REALLY REALLY glad that the Faction colors are available but I noticed some chatter stating that both types were there and want to make sure that I specify colors if necessary.
Creator Ola Hansson on May 9, 2012
@Rob Farley - I asked the same, and sent a query:
"Does the latest update with international shipping boxes mean that the free shipping on extra dice is no longer being honoured? I've pledged $210 for game + 3 sets of extra dice... do I need to change that?"
I was extremely disappointed to receive this response:
"That is correct. I'm afraid you'll need to add another $17 for one of the small international shipping boxes. Sorry!
-Fox Barrett
Ogre Correspondent"
Perhaps I am overreacting, but a company that is going back on its word like that is not a company I want to support. I have cancelled my pledge (well, put it back to $1 so I am still getting updates), and sent the following message:
"Back in update #13, it was said:
"We have already posted free-shipping offers on dice, shirts, and pins for overseas supporters who are paying shipping for something else (i.e., a game, or another dice/shirt/pin). We will honor those orders."
... since you are no longer willing to honour those orders, I am no longer willing to honour my pledge to you.
Frankly, I have been a fan of Ogre and SJ Games for decades, own several older editions, multiple copies of most of them, and was very much looking forward to this one. I was proud to support it through kickstarter despite how expensive being an international supporter was, and did so with no hesitation, as this project has been something I've been waiting for years to actually become realized.
But a company that can stop honouring its previous promises that easily is no longer a company that I desire to support. I am extremely disappointed and sad. Please pass my disappointment on to those people that made this decision. As much as I regret it - I am sure the game will still be excellent - I have now cancelled my pledge."
Creator Rob Farley on May 9, 2012
@SJG: Any chance of an answer to my previous enquiry? Does your pledge to honour the original free shipping (confirmed in update #13) still stand or do I need to buy a box?
Creator KevinR on May 9, 2012
@SJG -- glad you guys are keeping up.
Creator Steve Jackson Games on May 9, 2012
Tim - Congrats on getting an Ogre name. $200 gets a name and the game, but no extras, so if there are other things you want, pick them out.
Kevin - Thanks for posting the collection of links. Please do NOT encourage people to throw in extra money and "sort it out later." Absolutely, any time the money doesn't match the survey, we will do our best to sort it out, but the packages where the survey info exactly matches the pledge amounts will get taken care of first, and then the warehouse people will start trying to contact the remaining supporters, who will get resolved one by one. The people who support at $25 and then say "Now what's your charge to add a game and three shirts and send it to Outer Mongolia?" will be at the part of the queue that slops over to 2013 and might result in a refund and no KS game. I have seen the posts that say CMON is taking extra orders. Very interesting. And scary.

* Canada/Australia(&NZ)/UK/Europe backers have levels with games. Can add extras from main page (but need to add shipping boxes for extras).
* Other foreign will need to get games outside of Kickstarter (FLGS, Warehouse 23).
* Warehouse 23 (SJG storefront) will have swag/extras for sale only to Kickstarter backers. Pledge anything to be eligible.
* Any pledge of $23 or over will give access to the Car Wars design forum. If you don't like Ogre, get a Car Wars shirt. If you like Ogre, get Ogre stuff.
* Any pledge of $150 or over will get a pocket-sized copy of Ogre, regargless of selected level.

Just one last observation for Steve and Fox perhaps for an update tomorrow. The new shipping method may reduce the cost from $15 to $13 for Canadian customers for shirts, pins and dice, but it increases it by $2 to $17 for those outside Canada. I doubt this will be an issue unless people who've already pledged aren't alerted to that..
.
As noted earlier, from the previous wording, a number of us also mistakenly thought that those small items could be added to our orders without the $15 surcharge as we were already paying (lots of) shipping.

@Angel I'm in Paris, if it helps.
Creator KevinR on May 9, 2012
@myself -- actually, the main Warehouse 23 discussion is in Update #13. Update #17 was the European shipping update.
Creator KevinR on May 9, 2012
@Lawrence: leaving aside the questionable legality of CMON bypassing Kickstarter...
Read Update #17 and similar comments in later updates. Kickstarter backers (at any level) will be able to purchase Kickstarter exclusive swag from SJG's storefront, Warehouse 23, when that swag comes in this summer/fall.
Creator Lawrence "Saker" Collins on May 9, 2012
SJG---CMON is making it possible to add purchases after their Zombicide campaign ended. If you do the same with Ogre, that may alleviate some of the anxiety that seems to be building around the swag/shipping options.
Creator Anthony Mims on May 9, 2012
I think it'd be grand if 150-supporters got a patch. Not that we aren't already getting plenty, just that my g/f won't let me drain our budget any further and I really want a patch. ;)
Creator KevinR on May 9, 2012
@Tim, myself: Probably should add $55 to be safe -- $150 is a game+swag extra and $95 is a game extra, so maybe $55 is a swag extra (not that this level should be offered to people except at the locked-in levels.
Creator KevinR on May 9, 2012
@Tim -- keep the $200 slot. If I were in your shoes and wanted the $150 swag package added to a $200 pledge, I'd ask here (like you did) and proactively add $50 or so to the pledge. If Steve/Fox get back to you with an official answer, great. If not, the money is in place and you can negotiate something after the fact.
.
Of course, if you want 2games + swag + naming, add $150 as if you wanted and extra game+swag at the $150 level.
.
[I know nothing -- just guessing, but trying to identify something plausible if SJG is buried these last two days.]
Creator Graham Brand on May 9, 2012
@Tim: yes, by my reading the chance to name an Ogre was $100 of the cost of that pledge. The other $100 was the basic game package, which doesn't include swag. You can either increase your pledge to cover the cost of any extras you'd like, while keeping your reward level set at $200, or change your reward level and pledge amount to another package, such as the $150 reward, plus whatever you'd want to pledge for extras that aren't part of the swag package.
.
I assume the latter would then free up one of the $200 slots for someone else to take to name an Ogre.
Creator Marc-Antoine Rondeau on May 9, 2012
Those changes confuse and infuriate me too.
I pledged 158$: 152 for the game (which) included shipping, and 6$ for extra dice.
I added the dice specifically because the shipping was included, otherwise, it's not worth 19$ for 4 dice. And no, I can't add 13$ + a shirt or anything, since I'm already slightly over budget and have to eat.
It would be rather important to figure out the international shipping and clarify it from the start for Car Wars, I think. Otherwise, it would only result in confusion and Futurama quotes.
Creator Angel Baker on May 9, 2012
My wife is going to Paris in August. We also live in Austin. Steve: I'm willing to fill a suitcase full of canvas Ogre bags! I'm sure the extra bag fee is cheaper than shipping ;) just need someone in Paris (Or London, she might make the Olympics) to take the drop off.
Creator Tim Knoblauch on May 9, 2012
Hi, My name is Tim Knoblauch, I signed up to support at the $200.00 level and am very excited to get to slap a name on an OGRE. But from various recent updates I'm a little concerned that it seems I'll be missing out on all the swag. Did I read something wrong? Please advise. The new stretch goal swag all sound great and didn't want to miss out.

@Rob: it looks as though we need to buy a box, and the wording was unclear before. That's OK, we've got time to adjust our pledges up or down accordingly, but it might be sensible to highlight the fact that the shipping changes could affect previous pledges in another update, just to make sure all international supporters check before Friday.
Creator Rob Farley on May 9, 2012
I'm just as confused as Graham. When I pledged, I included an extra $42 for the dice, pins, counter sheet and original supporter t-shirt. At the time these were all listed as free shipping so long as we were paying shipping on something else. In update #13, when you announced international shipping, you said:
"We have already posted free-shipping offers on dice, shirts, and pins for overseas supporters who are paying shipping for something else (i.e., a game, or another dice/shirt/pin). We will honor those orders. They will be separate packages and will probably be shipped USPS, not FedEx."
Now you seem to be saying that ALL international extras need to pay for shipping. Do I need to buy a box or not?
Creator jonbly on May 9, 2012
We do seem to have lost some 'free international shipping on things we can slip in with the game', compared to the previous state. KevinR's comment above suggests that that was never possible, though.
I'd also assumed that "Targets go boom" was included at the $192 level (being >$150).
So clarification is good, but it shows how much confusion can be caused by ambiguous wording...
Creator Graham Brand on May 9, 2012
@Steve: Oh, I'm really sorry, I'd completely missed that the substitution section was headed Medium/Large Boxes. Many thanks for taking the time to reply.
.
Apologies for missing your answer an hour ago; I had to go into a work meeting. I went from the UK to South Korea at the weekend and it's 4pm on Wednesday here. These timezones are doing my head in!
Creator Steve Jackson Games on May 9, 2012
Graham, it's late (was going out the door an hour ago when a Thing happened, as Things are wont to do) and I am sure I did not follow everything you said, but (a) the intent of the changes is only to reduce overseas shipping while rendering moot a lot of apparent confusion about what "already paid shipping" meant, and (b) the Substitutions section is already headed Medium/Large Boxes. Are you looking somewhere else? Because no, you really can't get any counter set into one of those little boxes unless, perhaps, you grind it to powder first.
WRT the bulk of the All Counters set - Different material, different shape, different packaging (still being discussed). It may not outbulk the maps, but we can't be sure. Factory keeps sharing Good Ideas with us, and we don't want them to stop.

@KevinR: Thanks for the help. Yes, perhaps more swag is the answer........ ;-)
Creator KevinR on May 9, 2012
@Graham -- I'm sure that Steve and Fox will see this discussion in the morning, and try to clean up what confusing text they can find.
.
If you get more swag, the box won't seem quite as expensive... 2 classic counter sets are only $98. ;)
Creator Graham Brand on May 9, 2012
@KevinR: OK (shame!) but again, official clarification on the main page would help here, as the two comments are mutually exclusive (no counter set, vs can replace a shirt).
.
Hmm. $73 is steep for the Classic Counter Set... but I wants it... I needs it.
Creator Pete Hooper on May 9, 2012
Good on you for doing what's right re: customs! (Not that I imagined you attempting to skirt the regulations or anything.)
Creator Graham Brand on May 9, 2012
Grrr. "There", not "their".
Creator Graham Brand on May 9, 2012
@KevinR: I'm pretty sure that the comments in the extras that certain items (like the supporters shirt and the pins) could be included for $15 or for free if you already had a pledge that included shipping have only just disappeared. They've been their since Update #17 introduced the international options.
.
However, I may have been misunderstanding them: I was reading them as that they could be included with, say, a $192 pledge (which includes international shipping), but maybe they meant you only had to pay one $15 surcharge. Anyway, moot point now as they've disappeared, but if I'm confused, others may be as well.
Creator KevinR on May 9, 2012
@Graham -- the small box is 8 5/8" x 5 3/8" x 1 5/8". There is no hope of fitting an 8x10 counter sheet in there as is, and even if somehow cut in half I'm not sure that 12 half-sheets will fit in the height.
Creator KevinR on May 9, 2012
@Graham -- (not international so I haven't been noting every jot and tiddle)
The original project description included a few extras that could be picked up with $15 shipping, and these could be combined under the "no additional cost if you already are getting shipping" rule. So, a pledge shirt plus dice plus pins could be shipped for $15.
.
In Update #17, which introduced Canada/UK/Australia game shipping, it was stated that international folks would need to plan on getting all their swag from W23 after Kickstarter (excluding the items originally listed with the project).
.
The Car Wars shirt could be shipped internationally for $7, but nothing could go with it.
.
Now, SJG has figured out how to price international swag shipping, and so it offering some options. These are generally consistent with the original offer, with a small box being something like $13 to Canada and capable of holding a shirt and some pins/dice.
.
A basic problem with all the shipping is that *nothing* can be packed with the game. Each game is in a separate shipping crate from the factory, and no swag will fit. So everybody (US or international) will receive separate packages for each game and for their swag.
Creator Graham Brand on May 9, 2012
Also, please clarify this: the Small box notes that counter sheets cannot be included, but it can contain a shirt. The addendum notes that the Classic Counter Sheet can replace a shirt. I am assuming that the Classic Counter Sheet will not fit in the Small box regardless, but this could cause confusion.
.
Sorry Steve, I know it's late for you or Fox, but just to be sure, please confirm that the way to buy just the Classic Counter Set from the UK is to pledge 25$ for the set and $48 for the Medium box.
.
It would be verrrry helpful if the Classic Counter Set could be packed/broken down in such a way that it fitted into the Small box. Orders would multiple by a factor of many, I suspect.
Creator Julia Gosztyla Ziobro on May 9, 2012
Any chance -- and I know this is SO ridiculous, but hear me out -- that a 20' or 40' CONTAINER of SWAG items could be shipped to Europe and then shipped to European individuals via a fulfillment center there? You'd have to pay fulfillment folks a bit of money, but their fee and inside-Europe postage would SURELY be less.
I'm guessing that the backer breakdown goes: US, Canada/Mexico, Europe, Asia and everywhere else in terms of numbers... you could still do the huge number of US, Canada, and Mexico orders in the US, and then probably also handle the much smaller numbers of Asia and "everywhere else" orders from the US too...
Shipping a single container is not only (probably) way cheaper, but it allows you to send EVERYTHING including the oversize counter sheets and canvas bags because who cares how big the individual items are in cartons in the container?
It also (probably -- I'm not expert) cuts down on import fees/customs and I'm nearly 100% sure that it's better to ship lots of stuff in one big container by ship than sending bejillions of smaller boxes on airplanes.
I'm willing to bet that international backers (most of them) would not care if it took slightly longer to get their swag if you could reduce the postage costs. BONUS :-)
Creator Graham Brand on May 9, 2012
Am I reading this right, that whereas before the extras that were available for international customers at no additional cost if you had already selected a pledge level that included shipping are now only available if you include one of the shipping boxes? If so, that might need highlighting (apologies if I've missed it) as it could require people to change their pledge levels.
