@John H. "I believe that a big chunk of that printing cost is due to lot size of 10k vs 6k."
Given that unit prices drop as print runs increase, I doubt your statement very much. Yes, the bill would be less for 6K units, but not by 30-40% (using an arbitrary definition of "big chunk"). And selling to distributors has far fewer overheads than dealing with customers directly (less postage, less handling, less staff time answering queries, etc).
@John H. "Had SJG cut their losses by treating Ogre DE as POD, with no more than 5% to 10% excess, they might be in better shape."
And where exactly would SJG find a factory offering POD at anywhere *near* the same price and quality? With the Maelorum gamebook KS, POD would have cost $60+ *per book* - see http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/314653974/maelorum-reprint-an-epic#faq_58499 - there's no way any POD operation is going to handle a 25-pound 1,200+ counter game at a reasonable price.
Delays are frustrating but SJG have done an adequate job (in my view) of keeping us in the loop. If you feel differently, you've been offered a refund multiple times so perhaps you may wish to spare yourself further aggravation and take it up?

@John H - I think you dramatically underestimate the scale of this project. We are late, yes, but we are working on the game. Once Daniel finishes proofing the sample the Ogre Designer's Edition is out of our hands and firmly in the manufacturing process.

Your request for info is not unreasonable. BUT we also need to focus on our core business. Daniel and Brandon have been working on Ogre when and as possible, and each time an Ogre Designer's Edition job has needed in-house resources we have directed our staff as necessary.

But we cannot -- and will not -- devote 100% of our staff to this project. It's just not necessary at this time. The constant back and forth with the factory has been so that we can get the details right; the size and complexity of this project makes it unlike our usual games. Combine the game's difficulties with issues we have no control over -- labor problems in China, for example, are out of our control -- and it's going to take time to do it right.

It will take time. Lots of time. But I fully expect games to have shipped (and reached many) before November, 2013.

If you do not believe in our commitment to this project then I am sorry. We have done the best we can without sacrificing the quality Steve demands.

@Astral Wanderer, I believe that a big chunk of that printing cost is due to lot size of 10k vs 6k. Had SJG cut their losses by treating Ogre DE as POD, with no more than 5% to 10% excess, they might be in better shape. Certainly, they would be looking at a proportionally shorter production duration, shipping costs, etc. Probably less warehousing and distribution costs. SJG's decision to print an extra 4k copies for retail sale lies solely with SJG.

@Phil - Again, you misunderstand. I want to know what the hell you've been doing, when you'll be done, and when I might reasonably receive the goods that I paid for. That is NOT an unreasonable request, and I do not believe that I am alone in this request.

Also, I note that months ago, you repeatedly and emphatically claimed that Ogre would not be a year late. I think you're wrong, and the only way to prove that is see this to the end.

Besides, I primarily backed this for the Ogre Miniatures support and relaunch that you promised. How are we doing on that?

      Creator AstralWanderer 6 days ago

@John H. "Not even an acknowledgement that they've been sitting on backer money for a year now..."
A quick calculation should show that SJG will be lucky to break even on this. 10% goes on KS/Amazon fees (leaving $830K). Brian has mentioned the printer bill ($548K according to update #64) and shipping to overseas backers *alone* is going to cost over $200K ($110+ per package, over 200 EU backers). That leaves just $80K to cover shipping from China, delivery to the 5,000+ US backers, other merchandise (shotglasses, T-shirts, wooden models) and delivery of extras.
The one thing that may stop this project from turning into a net loss is the sets sold to distributors. SJG have mentioned 10,000 boxes being printed which means about 4,000 going to the trade - however even if they're able to persuade them to buy at a higher margin than usual (say 40% rather than the 35% mentioned in update #75), the $160,000 extra that would raise could still easily be swallowed up by other expenses.
So no, Evil Stevie is not rumbling towards a CP built of money with this - it's a labour of love (though possibly rather masochistic by now) which virtually anyone else would call business madness. Let's be grateful we're likely to benefit from it. ;)

    17. Combine%20symbol.small

Creator Brian Rayburn 7 days ago

Sitting on backer money? Do you really think Steve had all $923,680 made into a giant throne of cash? I seem to remember an update from a while back that mentioned them sending $500k+ to the printer. I'm certain that Phil, Daniel, Brandon, and the rest of the SJG employees have been getting paid for the work they are doing on this game. Lord knows there are several butt loads of people and companies involved in this whole thing, and I doubt they are doing the work involved out of the goodness of their hearts. Yes, there have been delays. Early on, there was less information released than there could have been. But let's not forget one fact: WE are the reason the damned thing is so late. If Steve had said, "Let's get this to print now", we would probably have had it by September or so of last year. Instead, they used KS to gauge interest, and in doing so the project ballooned past any reasonable expectations of a timetable. Personally, it is going to take God and seven angels to pull my boot out of Steve's ass if it goes past the first of January 2014. Until then, I'm good.

It has been 3 weeks since the last update of any sort, and two-and-a-half months since the last production update, despite multiple requests for basic information / confirmation of schedule.

Not even an acknowledgement that they've been sitting on backer money for a year now, and still at least 3 months from a generous implied mid-August date.

"This project successfully raised its funding goal on May 11, 2012."

It is now May 11, 2013 - the first anniversary of Ogre DE being funded.

Despite multiple requests for an updated / confirmed delivery date over the past few weeks, we have nothing more concrete than "a further delay, of two weeks or more" on Mar 13 (two months ago), backing off from the previous delay until "Not Before July" announced on Feb. 21.

      So where are we?

According to the schedule, with the two-week delay, Printing should have started at least a week ago.

How about a First Anniversary Update on where we are at?

@Matthew - If you (or anyone else) requires specific information on what we have in our database regarding your order feel free to write us at kickstart@sjgames.com and we can see exactly what items we have listed for your order.

Also last June we sent out emails to everyone confirming their orders which included what we think your address and ordered items were. That information should still be relevant unless you have contacted us and requested a change since then. ~Brandon

@Randall - nothing like that exists for public consumption. But the $100 level was basically: name on box and web forum, 3 free PDF's, access to CW forum, free 30 minutes of music (when available, still no word on that @Brian, sorry!) and the game, including the 3 bonus KS sheets, signed certificate and KS sticker on box. In addition you will be able to order KS exclusive items through W23 (when available in future).

I gotta say, SJG are doing communications correctly. I don't mind the delays as it's been communicated clearly and early.

Compare and contrast that to the Relic Knights Kickstarter - they were due to ship in May, and just announced this week that there are delays and they won't get product into their warehouse until at least September. A 6+ month delay announced one month before people were expecting to receive product is NOT the way to communicate :). So kudos to you, SJG!

For brick-and-mortar retailers ONLY! For $300, you will receive four copies of the Kickstarter edition of Ogre, one T-shirt, and one extra Kickstarter counter sheet so you can show off the constructible Ogres and buildings. Your store name will be in the list of supporters. NOTE that we WILL call, and/or confirm with distributors, and/or send MIBs to your address, to verify that you are a genuine brick-and-mortar store. Any unverified supporters at this level will receive two copies of the game and nothing else! So do NOT choose this level unless you can prove that you are a real, currently operating, brick-and-mortar retailer. NOTE ALSO that this has to ship to an address in the continental US, but the store itself does not have to be in the US.

One copy of Ogre Sixth Edition, shipped FedEx to Brazil, plus everything from the $25 level, AND your name on the box (on the side of the box bottom), AND a 4-color “thanks for your support” certificate signed by Steve Jackson. Important note: The "small box with certain extras gets free shipping) offer does not apply to Brazil. Be aware of all this before you support at this level, please, because you ship to Brazil entirely at your own risk. (Brazil only.)

Sponsorship at this level will improve the rulebook by letting us hire a fantastic illustrator to do some character images. The $335 level . . . PLUS our artist, working from your photo, will put you into rulebook illustrations, and your name will appear in the credits. Depending on your own look and your preferences, you might be an officer, a trooper, a tanker, a refugee, a civilian leader, a technician . . . (Okay, at this level we will ship your game anywhere.)

You are sponsoring a whole 8" x 10” counter sheet, which will go into every copy of the game. We’ll work with you to determine what goes on the sheet and how it will be colored. The unit design will have to fit Ogre canon (no clown faces on the Superheavy Tanks, no overt advertising on the Ogres . . .) but that still leaves a lot of leeway. Your name will go on the sheet as sponsor, and we’ll send you at least a dozen extra copies of the sheet. This also includes everything at the $100 level. (Again, shipped anywhere.)

Your own exclusive 8" x 10” counter sheet. Want an Ogre with your logo on it? Want a squadron of pink GEVs? No problem. We’ll work with you on colors, design, and choice of dies. You’ll also be able to print your logo, name, or other stuff on the margins of the sheet. This could be a promo item for a convention, distributor, or big retail store. These sheets won’t go into the actual game. We will ship you at least 3,000. We’ll own the remaining copies but (unless you wish otherwise) they’ll stay in our warehouse for at least a year after the new Ogre game is released. If you want to resell your sheets, rather than just give them away, you’ll have to sign a licensing agreement to use the Ogre name and images, but that won’t cost you extra. This also includes everything at the $100 level. (Shipping free in the US. You will pay actual shipping costs outside the US.)

Your own exclusive 10.5 x 17.125” counter sheet. You must use one of our existing dies; your best choices are Combine armor, Paneuro armor, or a sheet full of Ogres. Time is short, so you must either provide your own art to our specs, or make the "paint" job simple. You’ll still be able to print your logo, name, or other stuff on the margins of the sheet. These sheets won’t go into the actual game. We will ship you at least 3,000. Your Own Ogre Convention. Steve Jackson will attend your 2-day Ogre event anywhere in the US or Canada (you can ask about other locations, but no promises!). You will need to cover Steve’s hotel and travel costs separately, and dates have to fit his existing commitments, so factor that in, and please talk to Steve directly (post a comment with your contact info) before you pledge! You also get four copies of the Kickstarter edition, your choice of $600 worth of Ogre swag or extras, and naming rights to one Ogre in the Designer's Edition as described for the $200 level. Steve will bring a large stack of party favors (including three of our prototype 3-D Ogres which you can use as prizes), run events, talk about upcoming projects, sign things, and other general convention stuff. Or you can do it as a house party and only invite a few people. Your call.
