The Little Mermaid is a horror/comedy feature that follows a 600 pound salmon as it walks onto the streets of Port Townsend, looking for love.
Frenetic Productions is an independent production company in Seattle, Washington that crafts narrative and documentary movies with a Northwest flavor. For our second feature, that flavor is salmon. Help us invert the horror paradigm. See boys scream helplessly and the body count get slashed as we explore new ways to scare you out of your seats… laughing all the while.
We're setting out to make a scary movie that twists horror conventions into new shapes. Funny shapes. The script started from the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale and the question: What's the most horrible mermaid you can put in this love story? Salmon are a great indicator of the environmental impact our way of life is having on nature. By framing the plot in the oral tradition of the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe, we expose how different cultures impact the world. Now the world is going to impact back.
The tagline: In a horribly funny reboot of the beloved fairy tale, THE LITTLE MERMAID follows a 600 pound salmon as it walks onto the streets of a small Pacific Northwest town, looking for love.
Imagine if David Lynch made a Roger Corman movie.
The script is written. We’ve assembled a crew including Mike Ragen, Cinematographer; Jeremy Mackie, Gaffer; Jason Alberts, Production and Post Sound; Tony Becarra, Assistant Director; Armond Lara; VFX, Stacey Brotherton, Production Design; Doug Yule, Music.
The first step in this journey is a trailer, which we’ll use in our fund-raising effort for the feature. It will cost $10,000 to take us through production and post production to a three minute short that will demonstrate how the feature will look, sound, and feel. We have $5,000, half the money we need and come to you, the fantastic Kickstarter community, looking for the other $5,000.
Why does a little three-minute trailer cost $10,000, you ask? Well first of all, it will actually be a fully contained short, but it will demonstrate three things:
1. We can make a 600 pound salmon with a nice pair of legs and put it on screen.
2. A 600 pound salmon can be horrible and funny at the same time.
3. A low budget movie can look and sound scary good.
All fine and well, but why the 10K, you say?
Well, we have a pro cast and crew and need to pay them. We need to rent and insure the RED ONE we're shooting on. Heck, we need to insure everything. We need a fully equipped grip truck for the outdoor shoot in the dead of night. There are permits and hard drives, wardrobe and craft services. We need to build a shower. And it takes a lot of FX work to make a 600 pound fish run.
We can't do it without your help. By backing, you become part of the team.
