Untitledsculpture2009

About this project

I'm nearing completion on a sculpture, currently titled "Un-named Man (2009)," which stands approximately 13-inches tall and is sculpted out of Roma Plastilina Clay. Here's a Flickr photoset of the progress on this piece:

I started the sculpture after drawing this digital sketch of a man's head:

I initially began by simply sculpting a version of this head, because I liked the shape of it on paper and wanted to see it in more dimensions, to see if it could retain the simultaneous severity of angles and bulbousness. As I was finishing the head. I began thinking about African tribal sculptures, the ones with the giraffe-like necks and I thought, what would a Westernized modern version of one of those sculptures look like with this head atop it? Answering that question is the process of this piece. I currently have to finish shaping the arms and then some detailing.

Once the sculpture is complete, I would like to make a mold and cast it in bronze. The best place to do so that I've found to date in the New York area is Modern Art Foundry:

http://www.modernartfoundry.com/

After speaking with them, it will cost $1000 to cast this sculpture in bronze. I could try to find someplace cheaper to cast it if necessary, but dealing with them brings a lot of experience to the process and they also offer enlarging services, so I could investigate making a taller, larger size version of this cast in the future. I used to cast my own work years ago when I was studying art at Mississippi College and I'm interested in getting back into the practice of that and have asked Modern Art Foundry if I could watch some pours, receive some training, and perhaps do some apprenticing for them. I have no idea if they will be open to this, but they have invited me to visit for a pour.

I want to raise $2000 in order to cast two copies of the sculpture and hopefully begin reintroducing myself to the skills of a foundry.

Other drawings and paintings I've done can be seen on my Flickr account, while some items are currently for sale on Etsy: http://cksample.etsy.com

Pledge $50 or more

LIMITED REWARD     50 of 50 remaining

I will send signed print outs on 8.5x11-inch paper of the sketched head linked to in the description to the first 50 people who donate $50 or more, should the project reach its goal.

Pledge $100 or more

If the pledging goal is reached, I will cast 2 versions of the sculpture, one which I will retain; the second version of the sculpture will be given away randomly to one of the pool of donors who contributed over $100 to the project. For every multiple of $100 donated, your name will be entered. So, if you donate $500, your name will be entered 5 times into the pool of names for the random drawing. I will use Contest Machine (http://contestmachine.com) to set up the drawing and to randomly choose the winner. As the sculpture will be somewhat heavy, the winner will need to pay for the shipping of the sculpture in order to receive it. Should the randomly selected winner not want the sculpture or not be willing to pay for the shipping, I will initiate another drawing with the remaining contributors names to select a replacement winner.
