We want to bring more wholesome organic produce to our community by building a greenhouse to expand efficiency.
THE GREENHOUSE PROJECT
Hi, I'm Marieta Easley! My husband Brandon and I own Slice of Heaven Farm.
We started organic farming in 2010 when we moved from New Orleans to Folsom to a beautiful 17-acre piece of property. Our intention was to grow safe, healthy, delicious vegetables for ourselves and also our community. We wanted to spread good health and the love of fresh, whole food to people around us. We grow seasonal organic veggies and fruit and maintain a flock of free-range chickens for eggs. We have grown a lot in 2 years, going from never having planted anything to having enough produce to sell at two farmers markets. We also maintain a small seasonal CSA. Our goal is to serve more customers, both at the markets and with our CSA. We have many families waiting for a spot in our CSA program but we need to be able to grow more vegetables in order to serve them.
Here's where the greenhouse comes in. There are some crops that can be direct-seeded in our fields but many crops benefit from being started indoors initially and transplanted after several months. Right now, we start all our seedlings in our living room, on a small table equipped with a growing light. We can only start 4 trays at a time, which is nowhere near enough and almost embarrassing to admit. We need a greenhouse in order to start seeds year round. We also want to grow potted herbs and build permanent raised beds inside the greenhouse to extend our growing season for vegetables in high-demand, like tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.
We want to build an awesome greenhouse, about 18 feet wide and 100 feet long. The front half will be equipped with benches and shelving for potted plants and seed trays. The back half will have raised beds for growing vegetables indoors during the winter. We need to install a heat ventilation system for the summers because the Louisiana summer heat would kill everything inside without it. We need a misting irrigation system for the seed trays and a drip irrigation system for the raised beds. We will be building the greenhouse, benches, raised beds and irrigation systems by ourselves, with the help of one friend.
We need to get the greenhouse built and ready to go before the fall, so we can plant enough veggies to expand our fall CSA (we have more people inquiring than we can handle!). We are offering some cool rewards to people who can contribute. We have 30 days to make our goal of $5500! If we don’t make the goal in 30 days, we don’t get any funding. We’d appreciate any contribution you can make and even if you can’t, you can still help by spreading the word by posting our project on facebook or twitter or telling your friends. If you live near us, hopefully you will directly benefit from your contribution, by seeing us at the farmers market with more delicious vegetables than before or by scoring a spot in our CSA. If you aren’t local, you can still have the peace of mind knowing you supported a small family farmer who is committed to farming responsibly, with no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Our national food system can use some change and we want to help bring that change to the consumer!
What the money will be used for
- $2700 to buy the supplies and build the greenhouse and pay for labor for our hired friend
- $1000 to build an awesome timer-controlled misting and drip watering system inside the greenhouse
- $1000 for material to build benches and raised beds, pots, soil and seed
- $800 for kickstarter fees and rewards
Thank you, thank you and thank you! We are so grateful for your support. This farm and our mission is our dream and hopefully our life's work.

This is our mission statement (also found on our website):
Our crops and animals are raised lovingly with no pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics or growth hormones. Not only do we live sustainably off our land and feed our family with the wholesome, healthy food that we grow and raise, but we share our bounty with our community as well. We believe in the resurgence of the local food movement, where communities eat seasonal and locally available food. Our food is available at local farmers markets or through our CSA program. We also promote a respect for the environment and the world’s natural resources by providing safe and healthy food to the community and demonstrating and encouraging green practices with our customers. We use only reusable or biodegradable packaging for our products and incorporate a recycling program with our CSA.
We believe in recapturing the simplicity and basics of food. It has become increasingly difficult to put food on your table that came directly from a wholesome local grower, without being genetically modified, coated with pesticides, grown with hormones and antibiotics, shipped thousands of miles across the earth, packaged, repackaged, fortified, supplemented and processed. Please join us in our mission and support local farmers who farm responsibly.
