This interactive documentary film & book will explore the stories of the motel owners, the architecture, travelers and the road itself.
We are ending The Motels of Route 66 Kickstarter campaign. Any donations already given will not be processed. Instead, we are going to streamline the fundraising efforts with a newly added donation section on The Motels of Route 66's website utilizing the PayPal Giving Widget, where you can give directly.
I also have a new UPDATE on the fundraising effort. John Rothman, longtime owner of the Saga Motor Hotel on Route 66 in Pasadena, CA, has generously offered to match YOUR donation. For every $1,000, John will match it in total contributions to the project up to $5,000. The total amount of $10,000 will fund our initial production trip and post-production!
Incentive gifts will still apply with contributions through the PayPal Giving Donation application.
Thank you for being a part of The Motels of Route 66 project. Check out the new donations section on the projects website here.
THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT: This documentary film and accompanying book are about the iconic vintage motels alongside the Main Street of America, Route 66. The project will be traveling the road and capturing the tales within the walls from the motel owners, the travelers and the architecture itself.
WHAT THIS FUNDRAISING COVERS: The money raised will cover a month-long journey down Route 66 with a full four-man film crew (director, cameraman, photographer, lighting / sound). Costs include vehicle rental, equipment, gas, food, lodging and supplies. Fundraising will also go towards producer / director Simon Cantlon's two week location scouting trip down Route 66. Your contribution can make it all happen.
LET'S GET INTERACTIVE: The documentary and book will also seek contributions from people all over the world of their personally filmed footage and photographs from Route 66 for potential inclusion in the finished products.
THE ROAD: Route 66 embodies the American spirit...the road to a better life, new beginnings, adventure and pursuing your dreams. Opened for business in 1926, it served as the main highway to the west up until 1985 when it was pushed aside to make way for the bigger, faster freeway. From its beginnings as a path for Dustbowl migrants, to it’s transformation into a vacation destination for prosperous post-war families, Route 66 has spawned hundreds of iconic businesses, including mom-and-pop motels run by people pursuing their own version of the American Dream. Still alive and kicking today, Route 66, and the independent businesses alongside it still embody the romantic and very American notion of the power of the open road. From Chicago to Los Angeles and all points in between, Americans and people from all over the world are still driving Route 66 to capture its independence, history and sense of adventure!
WHO I AM: Simon Cantlon (producer / director). I have worked as a digital media, marketing, producing professional in the entertainment industry for more than 15 years. I was the Director of Digital Media at 19 Entertainment and I have also held positions in Digital Media / Marketing at Showtime and Fox. I have worked on many television projects including American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Tudors and Weeds. I have also worked with music artists including Annie Lennox, Jordin Sparks, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Adam Lambert and the estates of international icons Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali. I received an Emmy Award nomination for my online work with the TV show Dexter.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: You can help get the project off the ground and on the road so we can get these wheels in motion. We've come up with some rockin' incentives to reward you for your contributions. I will also sing the Route 66 theme song via a phone call to every single person who contributes to the project. I make no guarantee on the quality of the vocals!

END RESULT: The project will culminate in a documentary film and book capturing the spirit, history and stories of these classic motels, those that operate them and those that pass through them.
