About this project
When we started the project in 2008, our aim was to tell a positive story about Haiti and the strides that have been made against the HIV/AIDS epidemic ravaging the country. With the help of organizations like Partners in Health (PIH), GHESKIO, and UNAIDS, Haiti has become a model for treating HIV/AIDS in resource-poor settings. We hope to highlight the misfortunes that have plagued her history since winning independence from France and becoming the first Black republic. More importantly, we want to show the beauty, goodness, determination, and nobility inherent in Haiti and her people.
Months after the devastating earthquake Haitians are struggling to rebuild their nation. Millions are still homeless and have no access to healthcare. Not only does 80% of the population subsist on less than $2 a day, but Haiti is structurally impoverished. One of the main reasons for the 2010 earthquake's lethality was because of Haiti's extreme poverty on every level. Circumstances are dire, and it has become all the more important that we tell Haiti's story, explain her history of need, and keep the world's attention focused on Haiti.
Haiti's tragic struggle with AIDS parallels the country's equally tragic history, the two are virtually inseparable. "Conversations with the Living: Globalization and the Haitian AIDS Crisis" addresses this fact.
It is not enough to educate, we must empower, actively engage ourselves, and inspire others to do the same. We hope to build a network of activists and advocates that refuse to allow the people of Haiti and the struggles they face go unheard like they have in the past. The people of Haiti have the ability to fight this disease if afforded the opportunity.
When the funds are raised we will continue production in Haiti, where we will follow up with patients, healthcare workers, state-run hospitals, and NGOs in Haiti following the earthquake, including GHESKIO and PIH.
The final stages of post-production will begin, allowing the director the opportunity to step back and review all of the edited material inclusive of post-earthquake footage and updates with our subjects.
Please check out our website and blog for information and updates on the film, and follow us as we continue our mission of education and outreach, and look forward to a better future for Haiti and the hundreds of thousand of Haitians that struggle with this deadly disease.
