The first faithful film adaptation of the classic book by L. Frank Baum
Okay, we're sure you have a bunch of questions so we'll start with the obvious:
What the heck are you guys doing?
We're making a new adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Yes, it's legal. The book is over a century old and is in the public domain.
For more information, you can visit us at our Official Website.
What was wrong with the old one?
Oh, the MGM picture. Well, for starters, the book has a scene where the Tin Woodman uses his axe to fight a pack of actual wolves. Yeah, it's like that. We're not saying this film is darker or edgier than the old one. But it's certainly quite different, more interesting stuff happens, and nobody sings.
Oh, did I mention that Dorothy isn't a helpless damsel in distress? Turns out Baum and his wife were early feminists and Dorothy is an excellent role model for young girls. Or anybody else, for that matter.
What's your goal in raising money on Kickstarter? Now we come to it. Our immediate goal is to finish filming all of the live-action elements, i.e. anything we can put in front of the camera for real. We've already filmed most of the main roles, but there are a lot of smaller roles -- and the titular Wizard -- remaining to be filmed. Since we're making a fantasy film set at the end of the 19th century in a distant land that doesn't exist, we need to outfit all of these folks in unique clothing that we just can't zip over to the mall and buy.
We also have secured permission to film in a real historical building, a one-room schoolhouse that will stand in as a period-accurate single-room frontier home where Dorothy lives with Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. We need to furnish this building with period-appropriate furniture and set dressing. To that end we're looking to raise $5000 to purchase the following:
- Fabrics for custom clothing (such as pointed Munchkin caps, Munchkin women's clothing, green suits for Emerald City folk)
- Period clothing available from online retailers such as Western Emporium (banded collar shirts, gunfighter trousers, suspenders)
- Period footwear (cavalryman's boots, victorian ladies' boots)
- Set Dressing (bed, primitive table, ladderback chairs with cowhide seats, work table, lanterns, rifle, woven rug, etc)
While we need at least $5,000, should we surpass our goal there are plenty of other things still to do that any surplus would go to fund.
What's in it for me?
No, the laptop and iPad aren't included!
And that's about the shape of things. Thanks for taking the time to look this over and watch our video. We appreciate your support!
