About this project

My name is Patrick, my stage name is ontologist. I am a composer, musician, and video artist living in Chicago. My music/art is an eclectic mix of many genres and styles, in some ways representing our postmodern/Internet society and in other ways existing for the sake of original, absolute music. In all of my art I attempt to show the beauty of our world/universe by means of the seemingly eclectic culture we find ourselves in.

My first album Arrow to the Sun (you can find it in iTunes or CDBaby) was largely art music, influenced by popular music. On my next album, which is currently in pre-production, I am sort of going the other way around: popular music tinged with ideas and tastes of art music. The continuity between albums centers around 'content'; as in, what my first album is about is basically what this album is about, i.e. love, philosophy, meditation, and even some quantum physics and fractal geometry.

This album I'm currently work on, titled "The Book of Lists", explores new topics as well, such as bi-bifurcation, mirror-images, dream-states, and the importance of list-making, to name a few. It will feature a large number of amazing musicians from not only the Chicagoland area but also all over the world; some contributors include Matt Nicholson (Function Ensemble/Outshine Family) in London, Chicago Q Ensemble, Ian Wadley in Australia, the University of Chicago 'Friends of the Gamelan', and Laura Patterson (Vox Novus) in NYC. All recording, mixing, editing, album art, music videos, additional artwork, duplication, distribution, and promotion will be done by me.

The Kickstart I hope you can give me will help cover mastering and duplication of this CD/DVD set. Mastering will be done at the prestigious Carl Saff studio here in Chicago, hopefully in February 2011. Duplication will take place shortly after, where my friends at Bellwether Manufacturing in Indiana will help to produce 1000 copies, which I hope to distribute everywhere, including you!

23 Backers

If you are able to donate 15 dollars, there are two rewards you will receive! First, you will be sent a copy of the new CD/DVD. This will of course include the album art, which is an integral part of the art/piece and many have claimed is as expressive as the music and video itself. Second, along with the music/video album, I will include a limited-edition work of stencil art made by me, which also correlates to the meaning imbued within the sound and image.

Pledge $25 or more Pledge $25 or more

14 Backers

If you are able to contribute 25 dollars or more, I will include all of the above (the new CD/DVD project and the limited-edition stencil art), as well as my first CD/DVD release 'Arrow To The Sun'. Some of these works are available for view at: www.vimeo.com/ontologist , (also with important/beautiful album art!)

Connected as Patrick Liddell (669 friends)

I am a composer, musician, and video maker living in Chicago. I love this town, but also have found a love for many other cities in the world. I went to school at Bradley and Northwestern Universities studying music comp (and physics, briefly, in undergrad). In 2001 I toured Germany and Italy playing in ska/reggae outfit The Zvooks (Mad Butcher/Jump Up! Records), and in 2007 toured Poland, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia, France, Spain, and Portugal in Australian/UK electro-accoustic folk-rock group Function Ensemble (now Outshine Family, Black Map Records). I now teach music theory and composition at DePaul University, perform with the University of Chicago gamelan ensemble, and perform visuals for many DJs and bands here in Chicago.
