Burma is going through vast political, economical and social changes. I wish to return to make photographs of this extraordinary time.

OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS I HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTING BURMA IN IMAGES, PUTTING INTO PHOTOGRAPHS MY VISION OF A REMARKABLE COUNTRY AND IT'S RESILIENT PEOPLES. FOR DECADES THE COUNTRY HAS BEEN BUFFERED FROM THE RAPID CHANGES FACING MUCH OF THE REST OF THE WORLD AS THE GOVERNING JUNTA DID THEIR BEST TO SUPPRESS THE HOPES AND EFFORTS OF IT’S CITIZENS. WITHIN THE PAST YEAR MAJOR REFORMS HAVE BEGUN TO TAKE PLACE AND BURMA IS BEGINNING TO OPEN UP TO THE REST OF THE WORLD AND THEREFORE OPENING ITSELF UP TO RAPID AND DIVERSE DEVELOPMENT WITHIN IT’S OWN BORDERS.

DURING A BRIEF TRIP IN NOVEMBER OF 2011 I WAS GREATLY IMPACTED BY THE PALPABLE SENSE OF METAMORPHOSIS ENVELOPING ALL ASPECTS OF DAILY LIFE. THIS IS WHY I AM INITIATING THIS KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN TO ALLOW ME TO RETURN TO BURMA IN DECEMBER AND TO HAVE THE RESOURCES TO SPEND ENOUGH TIME TO TAKE A PHOTOGRAPHIC PULSE OF A COUNTRY THAT HAS BEEN A LARGE PART OF MY LIFE OVER THE PAST DECADE AND ONE THAT I AM HEAVILY INVESTED IN WITNESSING THE REINCARNATION OF.

NOT ONLY DO I LOOK FORWARD TO REVISITING PLACES THAT I HAVE DOCUMENTED ON PREVIOUS TRAVELS AND TO MEASURE THE CHANGE WITH FAMILIARITY, BUT ALSO TO EXPLORE NEW TERRITORIES THAT ARE ONLY NOW OPENING UP TO PERMITTED TRAVEL. I HOPE TO CREATE IMAGES THAT TELL THE STORY OF THIS INCREDIBLE TIME IN BURMA'S HISTORY, ONE THAT STILL CONTAINS VAST AMOUNTS OF THE PAST, BUT WHICH ALSO OFFERS UP NEW VISIONS OF THE FUTURE. AT THE COMPLETION OF MY TRAVELS I WILL SPEND TIME IN THE STUDIO PUTTING TOGETHER A SMALL BOOK AS WELL AS PRINTING PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE EXCURSION TO BE EXHIBITED AND PRINTED IN VENUES THAT WILL ALLOW OTHERS TO EXPERIENCE THROUGH MY IMAGERY THIS MONUMENTAL TIME IN BURMA'S HISTORY. I ESPECIALLY LOOK FORWARD TO SHARING THIS PROJECT WITH ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IN MY WORK AND WHO SUPPORT IT THROUGH THIS CAMPAIGN.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Traveling around Burma has always had its challenges, especially when one strays from the beaten path. From government spies to surprise checkpoints to unreliable transportation, there is always a surprise around the corner. I always look forward to pushing the boundaries so as to be able to document what lays beyond what the government wants me to see as well as ingratiating myself with local people wherever I go so as to be able to see as much of daily life as possible. Now, with the opening up of new territories and the lifting of many archaic laws I look forward to witnessing a lot of things that I never had the opportunity to see or hear, mostly due to my concern of getting local friends in trouble rather than myself. I have heard that prices are raising for everything from a car ride to a translator and so I expect to have to do a lot of haggling, but luckily I have a good group of old friends who I expect to be able to help me in various arenas. As usual I expect to get sick somewhere along the road, but we will cross that toilet bowl when it comes.
