It's been a while since I've sent an update--my apologies! There's been some chaos!
First of all, we took THE LOCAL to Sydney as part of the Head On Photo Festival. I showed at the Global Gallery, in Paddington, with 4 other artists. You can see who else was involved by looking at their past exhibitions page here. Head On is a really neat set of events throughout Sydney, and I highly recommend both attending it and participating.
The show was up for two weeks and was a great success. We got tons of foot traffic through the gallery, and I noticed it was often very quiet in my space as people read the text blocks that accompanied the images. I got a lot of positive feedback, and I also spoke at the Head On Seminar on the topic of partnerships between artists and organizations.
One of the best parts of Head On for me was meeting Gemma Rose Turnbull, a woman who did a project very similar to THE LOCAL, and only a few k's away, in St. Kilda. Her project about street sex workers called RED LIGHT DARK ROOM is astonishing, nuanced, informative, and beautiful. She has made a gorgeous book, and I highly recommend looking at this project!
During Head On I took a whole bunch of install shots to put into this update BUT...then my camera was stolen! And inside it were the install shots. So I'm sorry about that.
Ryan and I have left Australia and are now apartment hunting in San Francisco. We are excited to be here, though we are missing Melbourne very much!
As for your rewards, I am pleased to announce a timeline--you'll be receiving prints toward the end of August. I'll be setting up a new studio in SF, and as soon as that's up and running I'll be back in touch to get your preferences and addresses, for those of you that chose a print as your reward.
The postcards and other materials will get sent at that time as well--it seemed prudent to scan all the postcards before sending them out. People wrote such great responses to the questions as they were visiting the shows that I want to make a little book from them, so that I can share the best of them more broadly.
I've got a couple of other things in the works for THE LOCAL, so I'll be in touch again shortly. Stay tuned!
But that's it for the moment. Hope you all have had a lovely June!
All the best,
