About this project

Thank you so much.

We appreciate all of you who took the time and effort and money to help support and draw attention to our self funded TV network. We have added all of your names onto our thank you page. Please take a moment to look at all those who have helped us with this campaign. You can still help us on there as well. http://streamingarage.com/thanks

We started with an empty garage, very little money and a creative dream.

Tired of working on bad reality TV and sick of seeing creative smart shows like "Freaks and Geeks" and "Arrested Development" go off the air, TV writer Mike Rotman, left his job, gathered his creative friends, and proceeded to take the internet back to the 1950s.

1950s Live TV with a twist

Back when TV started it was live. Anything could happen and usually did. Sid Caesar Your Show of Shows, Uncle Milty, The Honey Mooners- millions of families would gather around the TV for these shared experiences. An experience that was then disccused the next day at the office water cooler and in schools around the country. What TV couldn't do was allow the audience to actually participate. To call in, to make suggestions, to change the shows format, script, characters, discussion points as the show went on. Now, we can.

Unlike TV,  Streamin' Garage shows air LIVE so fans can interact through chat rooms, Facebook, Twitter and video Skype.  Not only do we hear your creativity, we see it.  The shows are then syndicated to destinations like iTunes, YouTube, Roku, Blip, Boxee, and a bunch of other funny sounding names.

Each week since January 2010, Streamin' Garage has produced over 125 hours of content and have achieved over 4 million live views-all without money, angel investors, a publicist or agent.

Our philosophy at Streamin’ Garage is simple – we aim to provide smart, funny, snarky, and interactive entertainment that looks exactly like high production quality TV. As we call it, “TV Evolved. Live. On The Web.”

Our Shows

  • Stupid For Movies: "Movie reviews that don’t suck, even when the movies do.” Hosted by real film critics from Los Angeles Film Critics Association, episode segments include new movie reviews, the news with Chad Vader, instant streaming recommendations, recommendation for family film rentals and "Buy Rent or Burn." We’ve also had some great interviews including Colin Hanks, Paul F. Tompkins, Samm Levine, Amber Benson & Adam Busch, Dan Ireland, and Rodman Flender, director of "Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop" on June 30th.  http://www.stupidformovies.com
  • Stripped Down Live- First season hosted by Curt Smith (Tears For Fears) Performances and interviews with artists such as: Matthew Sweet, Gary Jules, The Daylights, Carina Round, All Day Sucker and Fitz and The Tantrums. We hope to bring this back for season 2 with an all new host and maybe break your band next! http://www.strippeddownlive.com
  • Stupid For Dexter- Weekly reviews & analysis of Showtime’s Dexter the day after a new episode airs. Segments include season predictions, “Driving The Dark Passenger,” and interviews with Dexter cast & crew. After 2 weeks on the air, we were the #3 search result for "Dexter" on Google, right after Showtime’s official page and IMDb - all this without even having a web site. We hope to build a Stupid For Dexter fan site with part of the money raised through this campaign!
  • Super Scary Horror Theater- Horror hostess Miss Dementia and her manservant Butch watch classic scary, cult, and sci-fi movies live with our internet audience. It's a whole new twist on the creature feature genre, Miss Dementia adds comic relief and interacts with the audience live though chat, Skype, Facebook, and Twitter.
  • Stupid For Football - This is Streamin’ Garage’s weekly sports show (when football actually is not on strike!). We have provided some of the best tips to win your league and were usually a week ahead of ESPN, Yahoo, and CBS Sports. Real fantasy football strategies from real football fans.
  • Wide World of Warcraft- Great WOW tips and news from people who actually play. We hope to do more episodes once we can tear our hosts away from their computers.
  • Future Shows- We have many new shows including game and comedy in development. If we can hit our goal- we intend to premiere these in the new season!

Shoe string budget? No, no budget.

Unlike 1950s TV which had individual sponsors for each show, that isn't true with the web. Not yet anyway. We truly believe we are on the edge of the next revolution in TV but the ad agencies aren't quite there yet. But you can be!

Obviously to produce this many 5 camera HD shows takes a very talented staff and crew. Unfortunately,  they all need to eat and pay rent. And after 18 months of working tirelessly on all of our shows, the time has come to pay them. That's right- 6 shows- some as with many as 55 episodes and no one has ever been paid. We all did it for the love of the shows and the chance to be creative in this new media space. (Even though our parents wanted us to be Doctors and Lawyers)

Help us prove our parents wrong! We know there is a future in full length high quality, smart, content, but we need your help to keep our shows going as we wait for Madison Avenue to catch up to the future.

Rewards- You are the creative.

As you may have noticed,  our rewards our a little different. We will not be giving out producer credits for money. Our producers work very hard and we don't want to take away from them. Instead-  some of our rewards will actually put you to work producing segments! That's right- producer for a day! For example: Do you want produce the "Buy, Rent or Burn" on Stupid For Movies? It's all yours! (We are getting tired anyway) If you don't see a reward you'd like- simply let us know and we can try to add it. Again, as with our shows, this is all about you. (Now don't you feel selfish!)

All or Nothing

In case you don't know how Kickstarter works. This is all or nothing. If we don't make at least $20,000 then we make $0 and you pay $0. If we can get $20,000 or over then you get charged and we make more shows! That simple!

Sincere Thanks

We appreciate all the fans we have made over the past year and half in our chat rooms, our Facebook page, thru Youtube, Skype, Twitter and other funny sounding sites. With all your views and participation we have taken our shows and network to levels we never imagined. But, this is crunch time.  We need to make the full 20k or we don't get a penny!!  It's all or nothing, so please give generously (whatever you can afford) as we continue to grow in this new media space with you.

Mike Rotman is a television and web writer, producer and director. He is an Emmy-Nominated writer for his work on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher and produced hundreds of hours of television over his career including; The Simple Life, Strip Poker, South Park and Nanny 911.

Tired of the takeover of TV by reality shows, Mike decided to enter the creative, yet low-paying world of new media. Rotman is currently the Streamy Award-winning Director/ Producer of Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show (Best Live Production). He has also built his own 5 camera live internet studio, “Streamin’ Garage” and is now broadcasting 6 original shows.

Although Rotman is making the switch to the web- he is no newbie. His first internet short, “The Oz Witch Project” was made in 1999 and opened the flood gates for all the “Blair Witch” spoofs that followed. In 2002, Mike created and directed one of the first web reality series called “Star Wait” which followed the lives of people waiting in line for 6 weeks to see “Attack of The Clones.” The series eventually went to DVD and was sold in Target stores across North America.

Rotman also directs short narratives including a web campaign for Trojan Condoms entitled, “How To Prevent Mistakes” and the acclaimed internet short “Sketch of the Dead” starring Paul F. Tompkins and Rich Sommer of Mad Men.
