About this project
Hi!
My name is Anthony Williams – I DJ under the name Lord Pyro or Pyro for short. I was born, raised and lived in Brooklyn for the majority of my life. I recently relocated to Austin and am enjoying my decision. It was the perfect choice due to its “small town in a big city” feel.
I've loved music all of my life. I first started playing guitar when I heard Prince's “Let's Go Crazy” and I never looked back. I graduated Brooklyn College with a Music degree with a concentration in Classical Guitar and Composition. I ended up studying Jazz at NYU, and led several bands before I decided to study music production. I had the opportunity to produce several independent artists and explore different forms of creative expression.
I fell in love with Dubstep - a style of music first developed in England, characterized by reggae influenced downtempo beats with hard, aggressive bass lines. Dubstep has a huge international following and is exploding here in Austin. Several Austin clubs have regular dubstep nights that are heavily populated with passionate followers. With so many DJ's from around the world coming here to play Austin promises to be a huge center of dubstep as well as the live music capital of the world.
I also have a deep love of science fiction as well. I used to read lots of sci-fi books and watched lots of television. My favorite television show was the Twilight Zone and my favorite episode is the classic episode To Serve Man.
The original Twilight Zone episode 'To Serve Man' is about an alien race known as Kanamits came to the UN promising peace and prosperity. Along with new technology they brought along with them a book ambiguously titled 'To Serve Man'. The Kanamits literally create peace on Earth, ending poverty, hunger and war, while encouraging humans to come visit their planet. After further translation, they realize that the title 'To Serve Man' is not a mission statement, but the title of a cookbook! Other than the interesting play on words, the episode was a commentary on our arrogance and imaginary superiority.
In a larger sense To Serve Man is a social commentary for our excessive egotism, greed and consumption that we constantly nurture that ultimately ends feeding on us.
I wanted to create a project that was an expression of my influences – what I liked, what fed my curiosity, and what I could infuse my self into. Thus the project To Serve Man was created.
To Serve Man is a five song dubstep EP which is based off of and inspired by the classic Twilight Zone episode of the same name. On Thursday, January 21st at 7:30 p.m. I will be spinning a 90 minute dubstep set to classic sci-fi films that I have edited together at the Alamo Drafthouse Lake Cinema here in Austin. My plan is to release the EP the same day as the performance.
My desire and intention is to raise $2000 for the mixing and mastering of the EP, some recording equipment and some promotional tools. Any extra funding will go towards creating high quality HD videos to promote the EP. I have been working with mostly borrowed and broken equipment for the last year. However, my love and passion for the project has kept me going.
I am thankful to Kickstarter for providing a means for the independent artist to make his/her dreams come true and give back to the world!
