A new dance-theater piece, choreographed by Sarah Konner that will be performed at the A.W.A.R.D. Show! in Philadelphia hosted by the Joyce Theater.
Heavy is Good, Dead is Tender, is a work for seven dancers and two singers that will be performed May 20, 2011 at The Arts Bank in Philadelphia through The A.W.A.R.D. Show! (http://www.danceaffiliates.org/SpecialEvents.html). The show is hosted and curated by the Joyce Soho in six different cities throughout the year. Following the performance, a moderated discussion between the artists and audience will take place to exchange ideas about the work and to encourage further dialogue. After viewing the pieces and participating in the dialogue, the audience is asked to vote on the twelve presented pieces to choose which choreographer/ company will receive one grant of $10,000 and two smaller grants of $1000 to use to create new work. The performance will be open to the public and publicized throughout the Philadelphia community.
The work questions the role of imagination in romance, our reaction to unaffected sexuality, and human connections through metaphor. With drawn, erased and then re-imagined images a woman dances in a pool of a man’s melting skin. They travel through rainstorms with rowboats that are too small, evoking sugary sexuality and absurd encounters. Our ability to re-score temporal experience creates shifts between sensual and matter-of-fact sexuality generating urgency for contact. Figures shift fitfully like flopping fish, maneuvering through their absurd courtships.
Because this show is not-for-profit, excepting the possible award for the winners, there is no funding available to help the choreographers create these works. Studio space for rehearsals is expensive, as is travel between New York and Philadelphia to bring all of the performers together, and this all necessarily comes before any money goes to the artists. Your contributions will make it possible for me to pay for rehearsal space, travel costs, and most importantly to pay the performers for their time, their skill, craft, expertise, and their invaluable contributions to the creative process, helping to break the pattern of artists unpaid for their work in this country. Any amount of contribution will support us and be greatly appreciated (so students, artists, fun-employed, even a dollar will help!).
