THE ST. MATTHEW PASSION PROJECT
Schola Cantorum in collaboration with Stanford University Office for Religious Life is pleased to announce the St. Matthew Passion Project. It’s an endeavor to present one of the greatest accomplishments of human kind, Bach’s Matthäus-Passion, in its original German. The Schola Cantorum St. Matthew Passion Project brings together a double orchestra and double choir, including 100 Schola Cantorum choristers, six professional soloists, and Julia Simon's Silicon Valley Boychoir -- all under the music direction of Schola Cantorum's incomparable Maestro Gregory Wait. Our partnership with Stanford’s Office for Religious Life will allow us to present our performance of the St. Matthew Passion free of charge in the remarkable surroundings of Stanford Memorial Church a week before Good Friday on March 22, 2013.
Please check out our rewards and make a pledge—even if you cannot be with us in March, please take the time to help support our creative endeavors and bring Bach’s masterpiece to life. Join us through your donation as we share the beauty and power of the Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Thank you.
WHO WE ARE
Schola Cantorum is an auditioned 90-voice chorus, under the baton of Gregory Wait. Founded in 1964 by the late Royal Stanton, we present dynamic performances of choral masterpieces, new works by major composers and music from a wide variety of cultural traditions.
But beyond our traditional concert season, Schola Cantorum turns the audience into a choir with its series of participative Summer Sings and annual Messiah Sing. Schola Cantorum takes small groups of Schola singers into schools, senior centers, parks and museums with enriching educational programs and participative sing-alongs. Schola Cantorum is proud to offer three great ways to provide thousands of community members each year the opportunity to actively participate in the joy of singing.
Q & A
Where and when is the St. Matthew Passion performance taking place?
The Schola Cantorum St. Matthew Passion takes place on Friday, March 22, 2013, at Stanford Memorial Church on Palm Drive, Stanford University. The performance starts at 7 PM and will have one intermission.
Will it be sung in German?
Yes. According to Gregory Wait, the original language is so tightly and beautifully fit to the music that much would be lost to hear it translated into English. A printed program with lyrics will be provided to the audience.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Schola Cantorum's full cost to present the St. Matthew Passion reaches nearly $70,000. We expect to receive funding from a variety of sources to help achieve our goal. The funds will address the direct artistic costs of performing the St. Matthew Passion as well as administrative costs. Our Kickstarter campaign acts as one of several essential sources of funding. We have set our Kickstarter goal at $5,500, something we believe is definitely achievable. We hope, with your timely support, that we may exceed our Kickstarter goal in order to produce a performance of the highest caliber.
