About this project
Hey Everyone!
I'm Aiesha and I'm an educator and a filmmaker, amongst many other things. The Black Girl Project is something I have been working on for nearly three years. The initial portion, an hour-long documentary is completed and is being screened. You can read some reviews and learn more about me here and read feedback from screenings here. However, the project needs to be expanded to include several formats and delivered as an interdisciplinary tool to help build critical thinking, inspire dialogue and empower young women and girls.
Here's what I have planned:
1. The film needs to be expanded, duplicated and packaged so that it can get into the hands of as many wonderful folks as possible. I have tons of audio and video of the young women I interviewed and want to flesh out their stories more. So I'm creating mini-docs or digital stories of between 10-12 minutes each which will take you a bit deeper into their lives. All of this will be included on 1 DVD. 4 panel eco-wallets, full color.
2. A book. Yes, a book! The BGP book will explore the why's, what's and how's behind the origins and process of the project, as well as take a look at the young women's lives since the initial filming. 8x10, hardcover, full color, approx 100 pages.
3. Curriculum and screening tool-kit. The whole of The BGP is intended as a teaching tool and the curriculum will explore the themes that were explored in the film: family, obstacles, dreams, love and relationships, the media and more. The screening tool-kit will assist anyone who's interested in hosting a screening create a memorable, educational, and enlightening experience. Approx. 25 pages, bound.
So there you have it! I've set an ambitious 6 month schedule for completion from Kickstart to completed project. And while there's a lot involved in expanding The BGP, this project deserves a lot of breadth and depth. The $8,000 raised will go towards printing of the full-color DVD, book, and poster. It will also go toward book and DVD design and layout as well as the research and time needed to create a comprehensive, standards-compliant curriculum.
The BGP film was completed almost single-handedly with a lot of sweat and tears and at it's root, is a tool to spark conversation and change both inter and intra-racially and generationally. The BGP is just a small, but vital piece of the puzzle to help ignite change and empower young women. I'm passionate about it and I hope you are too!
